Kebbi Denies spending N6bn on army, warns Minister against politicizing security matters

By Editor

The Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, has distanced himself from the claim of Senator Garba Musa Maidoki that he spent N6 billion annually on the Nigeria Army.

Idris stated this in a statement made available to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi by his Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Idris.

In the statement titled: ‘Re-How Kebbi Spends N6billion on Army Annually’, Governor Idris insisted that there was no iota of truth in the senator’s claim.

According to him, “the attention of Kebbi State Government has been drawn to a news story describing the above subject matter where a serving Senator from the State, Senator Garba Musa Maidoki, representing Kebbi South informed his colleagues as shocking.

“The above disclosures may be shocking, but I make bold to say that the Senator himself has exaggerated the said amount, especially as he was quoted to have said the Governor told him so.

“There is, however, no iota of fact in the statement, as His Excellency the Executive Governor of Kebbi State never made such disclosures.

“As a serving Senator, the Distinguished Senator Maidoki ought to have clarified some facts before tabling such motion before his distinguished colleagues, even though it a known fact that the issue of insecurity had bedevilled the entire Kebbi State.

The general public, members of the press and above all Distinguished Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are to note the very fact that His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kebbi State cannot and will not be too careless with a sensitive issue like that of insecurity.

“For a serving Senator representing the State to have made such a careless statement is, to say the least, very disturbing”.

The statement quoted Senator Maidoki to have said, “My Governor told us that every month, he spent N500 million on the Nigerian Army but where is the money being given with unending attacks and killings? If the Nigerian Army relies on Governors to give money before establishing bases at sensitive areas, then we are not making headways”, Senator Maidoki was quoted to have said.

While condemning the utterances of the Senator, representing Kebbi South senatorial district, Governor Idris noted if the above statement was part of what the Senator said, it can only be taken as a general one, not for Kebbi State.

He said: “he should, however, desist against playing politics with sensitive matters like insecurity which is more prevalent with Kebbi, Zamfara and Katsina States. This is too serious to be ignored.”

Arewa Youth Consultative Forum Affirms INEC's Credibility Following Peter Obi's Comments

By Editor

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has reiterated its unwavering trust in the credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following recent comments made by presidential candidate Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

In a statement issued by Yerima Shettima, President General of the AYCF, the Forum reiterates its longstanding belief that INEC is a reputable institution that consistently upholds the principles of fairness, impartiality, and transparency in conducting elections. Peter Obi's acknowledgment that the judiciary, rather than INEC, poses the greatest challenge to Nigeria's democracy, further strengthens our conviction in the integrity of INEC.

The AYCF has long maintained that INEC is a credible, impartial, and unbiased institution that consistently conducts credible elections. Peter Obi's remarks have vindicated our stance and affirmed that INEC is not the primary obstacle to democratic electoral practices in Nigeria.

We emphasized the importance of strong institutions like INEC in ensuring the integrity of Nigeria's electoral process. He further highlighted the detrimental impact of the judiciary assuming the role of the sole arbiter in election matters.

"The AYCF firmly believes that strong and independent institutions such as INEC are essential in preserving the democratic fabric of our nation. The Forum recognizes the critical role that INEC plays in upholding the will of the people through free, fair, and credible elections.

"We commend INEC for its dedication to ensuring the integrity of the electoral process and safeguarding the democratic rights of Nigerian citizens.

It is our steadfast belief that any attempts to undermine the credibility of INEC or question its impartiality are detrimental to the progress of our democratic system.

"The AYCF stands firm in its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance in Nigeria's electoral system. We will continue to advocate for the independence and effectiveness of INEC in carrying out its constitutional mandate".

Furthermore, the AYCF condemns any undue interference or overreach by the judiciary in electoral affairs. We believe that the judiciary's role in electoral matters should be limited to adjudicating legal disputes and upholding the rule of law, rather than assuming the primary responsibility for determining electoral outcomes. Such interference undermines the credibility and legitimacy of the electoral process and threatens the foundations of democracy in Nigeria.

The AYCF called on all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, and the media, to support and uphold the independence of INEC in conducting free, fair, and credible elections, while also urging all Nigerians to remain vigilant and actively participate in the electoral process to safeguard the democratic principles upon which our nation is founded.
