Arewa Young Lawyers Condemn EFCC Tactics Stood By Yahaya Bello

The Arewa Young Lawyers Forum (AYLF) said the avoidable drama  going on in Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as regards the so called corruption allegations against the former Governor of Kogi State Yahaya Bello , is nothing but a deliberate and calculated attempt by the commission to create unnecessary havoc and create a scenario in which the commission will further be thrown into yet another controversy capable of ruining the remaining authoritative image of the commission.

A statement issued by Abubakar Kurawa Esq President Arewa Young Lawyers Forum said, "By law EFCC is established to investigate cases of financial crimes in the country, with a view to submitting the outcome of such investigations to the Courts of Law for adjudication.

In no way did the EFCC Establishment statute  contemplate a situation where by the EFCC will became a law onto itself by way of convicting or passing Judgement on a particular suspect. However, in the eyes of The commission the case of Alhaji Yahaya Bello, is different.

The commission has constituted a court onto itself, trying and convicting Alhaji Yahaya Bello, in its own public court.

It’s clearly obvious, that the commission, does not desire to conduct  any meaningful investigation on the allegation leveled against His Excellency Yahaya Bello.  Rather, they are concerned about creating media uproar thereby poisoning the minds of the gullible.

"The same commission that claimed to be looking for His Excellency Yahaya Bello for questioning over his “Exemplary “ stewardship as The Governor of Kogi State, failed to have any questions for him when he made himself available at the commission Headquarters for questioning on Wednesday 19th September. His Excellency , voluntarily, without any form of forceful coercion, submit himself to EFCC for questioning.

"This is a fact known to most Nigerians. He was there, and went only because the Commission said they have some questions for him to answer. But, when he made himself available, they  said “oh sorry sir we have nothing to ask you.”

To create their usual drama, later in the evening on the same day, operatives of EFCC,  where seen at The Kogi State Governor’s, in full war gear shooting sporadically, claiming that they came to arrest His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello.

"The same Yahaya Bello, who was earlier in the day within the four walls of their offices and they turned him down, that “no questions for you sir.”

"It must be categorically stated here that EFCC as an anti corruption investigative agency must remain within the purview of the law and operate with utmost regard to the rules of law and the tenets of Fundamental Rights. It’s trite, that presumption of innocence is a vital ingredient of fundamental Rights as enshrined in our Constitution. Hence subjecting any individual to media trial and premature conviction is an aberration of that very  important principle.

The lawyers group said, every citizen have a right to fair hearing and his innocence must be presumed until proven otherwise by a competent court of law.

The forum observed that the matter of Yahaya Bello v EFCC is pending before the court and the court must be allowed to give its judgment, stressing that all the charades of trying to make headlines wrongly by the commission most be stopped. "We are running a constitutional Democracy in this country not a form of dictatorship.  To protect and preserve our democracy all hands must be on deck including that of EFCC" the forum President stated.

AYCF Tackles Gov. Lawal Over Comment On Matawalle, Call For His Resignation

The leadership of the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) in reaction to recent comments and demands made by Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal regarding the resignation of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle.

AYCF in a statement issued by it's President General Yerima Shettima said, "it is with utmost urgency and seriousness that we unequivocally state that it is not Minister Matawalle who should resign, but rather Governor Dauda Lawal himself, given the alarming evidence that has emerged of his involvement in financing terror groups operating within the region.

In a recently circulated document titled *RE-NORTH-WESTERN GOVERNORS/UN-ORGANIZED SECURITY SUMMIT IN KATSINA*, the intricate ties between Governor Lawal and criminal enterprises are laid bare. Within this document, a request is made for the staggering sum of One Billion, Three Hundred and Seventy-Eight Million Naira to be allocated for a dubious state government reconciliation programme with notorious bandit leaders.

The group said, "This initiative raises serious ethical and legal concerns, especially considering that the funds were earmarked for distribution to high-profile bandit leaders including Bello Turji, Dogo Gide, Ado Aliero, Halilu Sububu, and Gwaska Dan Karami, along with payoffs to certain media houses and influencers. Such transactions indicate a deep-seated complicity with the very elements who have wreaked havoc and fear throughout our communities.

"Moreover, the recent actions and escalating desperation displayed by Governor Lawal seem to directly correlate with the significant setbacks he has experienced in his attempts to navigate the security crisis. Following the arrest of his former aide, Bashir Hadejiya, on serious charges of gun running and international criminal conspiracy, Lawal appears to have adopted a defensive position.

"Additionally, the elimination of bandit leader Halilu Sububu and the diminishing power of criminal factions, attributed to the steadfast efforts of Minister Matawalle and the armed forces, have further exacerbated his unease.

"Governor Lawal's calls for Matawalle's resignation reflect not only a diversionary tactic but also a grave misunderstanding of the dire circumstances we face as a region. It is clear that the ongoing ‘fresh onslaught’ by Minister Matawalle has yielded palpable results in the battle against banditry, thereby weakening the affiliates of criminality that Governor Lawal appears to be shielding.

"If we are to capitalize on the successes that have been achieved under Minister Matawalle's stewardship, we must demand that Governor Lawal steps down. His tenure has fostered an environment where governance and criminality appear to overlap dangerously.

"In light of the evidence against Governor Dauda Lawal and the implications it bears for our collective security, the AYCF is calling for the immediate resignation of the Governor. Should he fail to resign voluntarily, we advocate for the declaration of a total state of emergency in Zamfara State, which would entail the removal of Governor Lawal and the appointment of a military sole administrator. Such a measure is essential to restore order and address the deteriorating security situation through the proven methodologies employed by Minister Bello Mohammed Matawalle".

AYCF averred that the people of Zamfara and the broader region deserve governance that prioritizes their safety and well-being, adding that we cannot afford to maintain leaders whose interests seem to align more closely with criminals than with their constituents. "The time for decisive action is now" the forum stressed..

AYCF Decries Torture Of Seaman Abbas, Wants Perpetrators Prosecuted

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF), has condemned the harrowing case of Seaman Haruna Abbas, who has been unlawfully incarcerated and subjected to inhumane treatment for the past six years.

AYCF in a statement issued by it's President General Yerima Shettima said, recent revelations made by the Seaman's wife, Hassana Abbas, on the Berekete Family Radio in Abuja, brought to light the cruelty and injustice that a man, who dedicated his life to serving his nation, has endured at the hands of Brigadier General Muhammad S. Adamu and other individuals complicit in this gross violation of human rights.

'It is with profound sorrow and indignation that we learn of the conditions under which Mr. Abbas has been held captive" Shettima stated.

According to Hassana Abbas, her husband has not only been subjected to wrongful imprisonment but has also endured severe psychological and physical torture during his time in custody.

"Such acts are not only a gross violation of his fundamental human rights but also a stain on our national conscience. It is unacceptable that an individual who served his country diligently in the maritime sector should be treated in this manner by those tasked with upholding justice and protecting our rights as citizens".

The AYCF unequivocally condemned the actions of Brigadier General Muhammad S. Adamu and all those involved in the wrongful conviction, unjust incarceration, and subsequent torture of Seaman Abbas.

"We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Abbas, as well as a comprehensive investigation into his case that holds accountable all individuals implicated in this egregious violation of justice. The time has come to reaffirm our commitment to the rule of law, and to ensure that those who perpetrate such abuses do not act with impunity.

"Moreover, we urge the Nigerian Army and the relevant authorities to establish transparent mechanisms for reviewing cases of alleged wrongful detention, especially those involving military personnel who, like Mr. Abbas, continue to suffer in silence while their rights are trampled upon.

AYCF said It is vital that an environment where justice prevails and where the dignity of every citizen is upheld regardless of their profession or background is created.

He stressed that the plight of Seaman Abbas should serve as a rallying cry for all Nigerians who value justice and human rights , adding that his story is not just about an individual; it is emblematic of a broader systemic issue that affects many citizens who fall prey to arbitrary detention and abuse of power.

"We recognize that the path to justice can be arduous and fraught with challenges, but we are resolved to amplify Mr. Abbas’s call for justice until he is freed. We call upon human rights organizations, legal advocates, and civil society to join us in this fight for justice.

"It is imperative that we come together as a society to raise awareness of Seaman Haruna Abbas's plight and to ensure that his story does not fade into obscurity. The collective voices of concerned citizens can foster a culture of accountability and transparency in our institutions.

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum reiterated its unwavering support for Seaman Abbas and his family and her that they stand united in their demand for justice, and continued advocacy for all those who have been wronged by systems intended to serve and protect them, adding that they will not rest until justice is served, and the perpetrators of such heinous crime brought to their rightful place before the law.

AYCF therefore called on the authorities and all concerned parties to respond swiftly and decisively to this grave injustice.

"The time to act is now. Justice for Seaman Haruna Abbas is not just a demand; it is a moral imperative that we must uphold for the sake of humanity, dignity, and the rule of law" Shettima stressed.

NEF Spokesman Highlights Death of Notorious Bandit Leader as Key Development in Tackling North-West Insecurity

Northern Elders Forum (NEF) spokesman Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, has recently expressed satisfaction regarding the reported killing of Halilu Buzu Sububu, a notorious bandit leader.

This incident, which transpired as a result of an operation conducted by the Nigerian Military under the leadership of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has underscored a critical turning point in the ongoing war against insecurity that has plagued Nigeria’s North-West region for far too long.

The NEF Spokesman says his response to this significant development reflects a broader commitment to the restoration of security and stability in the North. Suleiman highlighted a growing optimism regarding the military's efforts, suggesting that the elimination of Sububu, a major arms supplier to bandits may provide a strategic advantage in diminishing their operational capacity.

In reaffirming optimism for a sustained momentum in military operations, Suleiman calls upon the Nigerian government to provide greater backing for the Junior Defence Minister.

"This advocacy is positioned not merely as a request for resource allocation but as a crucial endorsement of a concerted effort aimed at dismantling the formidable network of banditry that has engendered fear and disruption within communities," he said.

Suleiman who was responding to questions by reporters during a recent event in Zaria also dispelled misconceptions regarding the Forum's stance towards President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration. Contrary to narratives that cast the NEF as antagonistic towards the current government, Suleiman articulated a nuanced position that emphasizes constructive criticism as a tool for national progress.

He asserted that the NEF is not in the business of vilifying any administration but rather aims to uphold a standard of accountability that is vital for the nation’s advancement.

"In the face of persistent insecurity, recent developments signal a shift towards positive change. The elimination of such a notorious bandit kingpin marks a significant achievement for the government, showcasing tangible efforts to address the security crisis that has inflicted immense suffering on our communities.

As we navigate this complex landscape, it is paramount that we foster an environment of understanding rather than criticism.

Suleiman, the spokesman for NEF, emphasizes that while the government's progress is commendable, the fight against banditry is far from over. Recognizing the determination of the Nigerian Army and allied security agencies is vital—not only for morale but also for the collective determination necessary to rid the region of this enduring threat.

The call for unity in support of ongoing military operations is essential; and divisive critiques that could undermine the progress being sought must be discouraged.

Suleiman articulates a vision for Nigeria's future that balances support for military efforts with a culture of respectful engagement with leadership. This approach underscores an important distinction: critiques of government actions should not be misconstrued as opposition, but rather as a sincere desire for improvement and accountability. As Nigeria grapples with multifaceted security challenges, it is vital to maintain focus on collaborative efforts that prioritize the well-being of all citizens.

"Championing military initiatives against banditry while promoting constructive dialogue is a commitment to enhancing societal well-being. This dual approach seeks not only to eradicate insecurity but also to lay the groundwork for a future marked by peace and progress. As we collectively aspire for a Nigeria free from the specter of violence, it is this spirit of cooperation and understanding that will prove pivotal on our path to recovery," Suleiman said.

The NEF's spokesman delineates a clear vision for the future of Nigeria amidst the ongoing challenges presented by insecurity. As Nigeria confronts the multifaceted challenges of national security and development, the insights and advocacy of the NEF will remain pivotal in shaping a future where peace and progress are attainable for all citizens," he said.

NAN Commend Gallant Troops Renewed Leadership Fight Against Banditry In North-West

The Northern Awareness Network (NAN) has  commended the bravery and resolve of the Nigerian Armed Forces under the astute leadership of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle in military's rigorous operations—spurred by the directives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu which has  initiated a significant turning tide in the persistent battle against banditry, particularly in the North-Western region of Nigeria.

According to the northern group in a statement issued by it's Chairman Salihu Suleiman, the Northern region has long been beleaguered by the terror and violence inflicted by notorious bandit leader Bello Turji Kachalla whose criminal enterprise, characterized by extortion, intimidation, and the tragic loss of lives, has wrought havoc upon our local communities.

NAN averred that the audacity with which Turji has operated, compelling citizens to pay exorbitant protection levies and perpetuating a culture of fear, is a matter of grave concern for all stakeholders in our beloved nation.

"In a decisive move to combat the incessant menace of banditry, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated Minister Matawalle to lead intensified military operations aimed squarely at dismantling Turji's illicit activities. This directive symbolizes a pivotal juncture in Nigeria's ongoing struggle against banditry, emphasizing the government's unwavering commitment to restoring peace and security to vulnerable communities.

"The recent strategic realignment of military resources to Sokoto, where Minister Matawalle has relocated to ensure enhanced oversight, further underscores the government's urgency to reclaim authority in the region. The commitment shown by both President Tinubu and Minister Matawalle serves as a beacon of hope for citizens weary of insecurity".

NAN therefore applauded the swift action taken by Minister Matawalle and the gallant troops of the Nigerian Armed Forces. Their recent operations have clearly demonstrated effectiveness in incapacitating bandit elements, leading to a marked decline in the organized criminal activities that once seemed unassailable.

Suleiman said, reports indicate that bandit leaders, who were once emboldened by a perceived lack of concerted military presence, have been sent scampering into the shadows, with their criminal enterprises thrown into disarray. This newfound momentum in our security apparatus is both reassuring and promising, the group said.

"The neutralization of Halilu Buzu a foreign national (from the Republic of Niger)is a terrorist leader involved in cattle rustling and illegal gold mining in Jawayi Anka LGA of Zamfara State and a notorious leader of the bandits marks a significant milestone in the fight against banditry in Nigeria, reflecting the resolve of local authorities to confront and dismantle criminal networks.

"This development not only reassures residents of Zamfara State but also represents a broader commitment to securing the nation against the threats posed by both domestic and foreign criminals. The fight against banditry is ongoing, but with sustained efforts like those demonstrated by Minister Matawalle, there is hope for a more peaceful and secure future for the region.

"In light of these recent successes, we call for deeper support and understanding from the public. The collaboration of citizens is paramount in the collective endeavor to restore peace and stability within our communities. The resilience of the Nigerian populace and their participation in intelligence-sharing efforts will serve to fortify the recent gains achieved by our military forces.

Successes Against Insecurity In N'West States Under Matawalle Commendable Says AYCF

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has commended the recent strides made in the fight against banditry in Nigeria’s North-West region, particularly under the strategic leadership of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle.

A statement issued by the President General of the forum Yerima Shettima says, in a period marked by considerable fear and violence, largely instigated by notorious bandit leader Bello Turji Kachalla, the forum recognizes the overwhelming response orchestrated by the current administration, reflecting a renewed commitment to restoring peace and security to our communities.

He noted that in recent months, the Northwest has been besieged by a terrifying surge in banditry, casting a pall of insecurity that has affected the daily lives of countless citizens, adding that  Turji’s relentless campaign of terror, which has involved extorting protection levies and inflicting grievous harm on innocent civilians, underscores a critical moment in our national discourse on security.

"It is, therefore, commendable that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken decisive action by mandating Minister Matawalle to lead intensified military operations aimed at dismantling Turji's criminal enterprise.

"This redirection in military strategy is not merely a tactical maneuver but a vital step towards reclaiming the dignity and safety of our people. The military's recent engagement with bandits has signified a departure from previous operations, showcasing a newfound tenacity reminiscent of earlier engagements when the military acted without the reticence brought on by media scrutiny".

AYCF further said, under Matawalle’s guidance, the troops have risen to the occasion, confronting banditry not as faceless adversaries but as defenders of honor tasked with the noble duty to restore peace within our borders.

The AYCF said it firmly believes that the government's renewed dedication to total disarmament, demobilization, and reconstruction of affected areas is both timely and critical. The proactive measures taken thus far have already resulted in the displacement of bandit elements, an encouraging indication of the military's resolve, Shettima said.

"We urge the troops to maintain this momentum and ensure the total eradication and capture of all criminal elements in the region. We have unfaltering confidence in Minister Matawalle's ability to guide our military forces to victory against the scourge of banditry.

"It is crucial, however, to heed the insights of military leaders such as General Christopher Musa, who remind us that banditry should not be viewed merely as the actions of deranged individuals. This mindset oversimplifies a multifaceted crisis and fails to address the systemic issues that underlie banditry.

"While our military's concerted efforts can suppress bandit activities in the short term, sustainable peace in the North-West requires comprehensive solutions that encompass socio-economic development and community engagement—an approach equally as vital as military intervention.

"The emergence of banditry in our region is symptomatic of years of neglect, marginalization, and limited access to resources. As such, President Tinubu’s military mobilization efforts should not stand in isolation; they must be accompanied by robust strategies aimed at addressing the socio-economic disparities that have contributed to this vicious cycle of violence.

"By investing in programs that empower local communities and restore faith in governance, we can mitigate the conditions that allow banditry to thrive.

While we commend the significant strides made in the military's fight against Bello Turji and his cohorts, we urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration to adopt a holistic approach that intertwines military action with equitable socio-economic development.

"Together, these efforts will pave the way for sustainable peace and security in Nigeria’s Northwest region, ensuring that our communities flourish rather than merely survive in the shadow of violence".

The Forum said it stands ready to support these initiatives and is committed to fostering dialogue, peace, and development within our communities.
