Degrading of banditry: Ohanaeze youths pass vote of confidence on Matawalle, military high command

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has lauded the Nigerian Military over the recent onslaught against bandits.

This came as the military neutralized top bandits within the past few weeks, a development that has received accolades from across the country.

In a statement made available to journalists on Monday, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, said the recent feat by the Military had reignited hope in the hearts of Nigerians.

Okwu said bandits, who hitherto acted like they were invincible had been decimated by the military in what he called “a determined vigour to take back the country from terrorists.”

According to him, “our hearts glide with joy over the recent feat recorded by the Nigerian Military in the fight against bandits and terrorists.

“For several months, these bandits instilled fear in the minds of Nigerians as they acted and operated as though they were invincible.

“However, all that has changed with the recent onslaught by the Military against them, like never before.

“There is a clear indication that the President Bola Tinubu’s order that the security chiefs should relocate to the North West and wipe out banditry, has made remarkable impacts.

“Our kudos goes to the Minister of State, Defence, Bello Matawalle and the Service Chiefs for this collaborative action which has rekindled hope in the hearts of Nigerians.

“The degradation of the bandits' operations, which has even culminated into an internal war among them, is no mean feat.

“We are proud of the Nigerian Military and the Defence Minister, State, Malawalle, who has shown commitment towards the restoration of peace and security across the Nigerian states.

“The Minister coordinated the operation in the North West, which success we are all celebrating. We pass a vote of confidence in him and the other defence chiefs and urge them to maintain the tempo.

“We commend Matawalle, the Military High Command, the intelligence agencies, and the troops for their valiant efforts, synergy and dedication, which have resulted in the recent laudable outcomes.”

While saluting President Tinubu on the occasion of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, Okwu urged him to continue to keep faith with his security chiefs “as we are proud of their recent achievements.

“All we ask for is that Nigerians should continue to encourage them as they carry out this very important duty of securing the country.”

“Having said this, we also urge Zamfara State governor, Dauda Lawal to end further distraction of the Defence Minister, State, Matawalle and allow him to concentrate on his onerous service to the nation.

“Security should be fully detached from politics, as Governor Lawal is currently doing. It is not in the best interest of the country.

“We also call on Matawalle and the other security chiefs to remain undaunted and not be distracted as the good people of Nigeria appreciate their sense of dedication to duty,” Okwu further stated.

Banditry: Strategic move by Mattawalle yielding positive results - AYCF

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) wishes to express its profound gratitude and support for the remarkable strides made by the military operations in the North-West region under the stewardship of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle. Following his recent relocation to Sokoto as directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we take this opportunity to acknowledge the successes recorded in the ongoing efforts to combat the pervasive banditry that has plagued our communities.

In recent months, we have witnessed a significant reduction in the activities of bandit groups in the North-West, a direct result of the strategic initiatives implemented under the current military leadership. The neutralisation of notorious bandit leader Halilu Sububu, alongside the capture of several other prominent figures in the banditry network, stands testament to the effectiveness and resolve of our military and its commanders. These operations have not only instilled a sense of hope among the affected communities but have also laid a solid foundation for sustainable peace in the region.

The AYCF in a statement by it's President General Yerima Shettima strongly commended the collaborative efforts of the military, intelligence agencies, and local stakeholders that have brought about these successes, adding that the timely and coordinated response to the challenges of insecurity has illustrated what can be achieved through unity of purpose and strong leadership.

"Indeed, the intelligence-led operations in the North-West have exemplified the kind of proactive governance that we need to ensure the safety and security of our people. We are particularly encouraged by the agility with which the military has adapted to the evolving nature of these banditry threats. The past few operations have showcased not only the capability of our troops but also their commitment to restoring peace in our communities.

"The dismantling of the operational capacities of key bandit leaders sends a resolute message that the government is serious about tackling insecurity and as a forum we urge President Tinubu to consider the continuation of Bello Mohammed Matawalle’s tenure as Minister of State for Defence.

"His leadership has proven effective, and his strategic vision for tackling insecurity in the North-West deserves to be supported and sustained. Retaining Matawalle in this crucial role will enable continued oversight of the military’s operations while ensuring that the successes we have observed are not only sustained but further built upon".

Shettima said,  the people of the North-West have shown their resilience in the face of adversity, and with effective leadership, we can create a safer environment for all and that as stakeholders in the region's peace and development, they are optimistic about the future, provided we maintain focus on the pressing security issues while supporting effective leadership in the defence ministry.

The AYCF called on all stakeholders, including community leaders and citizens, to support the ongoing military operations and cooperate with the authorities in the quest for lasting peace. Together, we can overcome the challenges before us and secure a brighter future for our children and generations to come.

"We stand firmly behind the military and the Federal Government in their quest to ensure that the safety of our communities is paramount. We look forward to continued successes in the fight against banditry and an unwavering commitment to the peace and progress of the North-West region under the guidance of capable leaders like Bello Mohammed Matawalle".

N'West: Matawalle Leadership Role Key To Sustained Fight Against Insecurity, NAN Tells Tinubu

The Northern Awareness Network (NAN) has expressed its deep gratitude and commendation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his decisive leadership in addressing the rampant insecurity that has plagued the North-West region.

This is even as the group averred that, under President Tinubu 's directive, and with the pivotal role played by the Defence Minister for state, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, the country has witnessed a significant transformation in the security landscape that has benefitted the lives of countless citizens.

According to the northern group in a statement issued by it's Chairman Salihu Suleiman, "Before the relocation of Matawalle to Sokoto, the North-West was consumed by the terror of banditry and kidnapping, becoming an unfortunate battlefield for both criminals and innocent civilians.

"The virulent spread of these heinous acts turned our communities into frontline danger zones, leading to a situation where survival was an everyday struggle for our people. However, today, we find ourselves in a vastly improved security atmosphere, which can be attributed to focused efforts at restoring peace and safety to our beloved region.

Under Matawalle's stewardship, we have seen concerted efforts to pin down bandits and dismantle their networks, pushing them into isolated enclaves.

"This has significantly curtailed their reach and influence, allowing our citizens to gradually reclaim their lives and livelihoods. It is therefore important to acknowledge that the resilience and strategic direction provided by Defence Minister Matawalle have been instrumental in advancing the Tinubu administration’s promise of enhanced national security.

As residents of the North, we understand the gravity and implications of living under constant threat, and we realize just how precious this newfound progress is. To those who may dismiss the importance of these developments due to their self-interest in the conflict, we remind them that firsthand experiences must not be oversimplified or underestimated. The peace we are beginning to enjoy is a collective triumph deserving of gratitude and reflection, the group stressed.

"We extend our heartfelt commendation to our gallant troops, whose bravery and commitment to duty have played an irreplaceable role in this endeavor. Their sacrifices do not go unnoticed, and we applaud the new spirit of cooperation among our security agents that has been fostered under the leadership of President Tinubu and Defence Minister Matawalle. Moreover, we are grateful for the aid and support from our international partners, whose contributions have been vital in fortifying our fight against these insurgent threats".

NAN however said, "while we celebrate these achievements, we must underscore that the journey towards lasting peace is far from over. In order to secure a comprehensive victory over insecurity, we urge President Tinubu to retain Mohammed Matawalle in his critical role as Defence Minister. His continued leadership is essential for navigating the complexities of this ongoing battle and ensuring that our resources are used effectively and judiciously.

"Victory in this fight will only be realized through a full cessation of hostilities, disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of former combatants within the region. These steps are paramount in restoring long-term peace and stability to our communities. We must commit to working hand in hand with all stakeholders, focusing our combined efforts toward a harmonious society where security is no longer a fleeting sentiment but a permanent state of existence for all Nigerians".

The Northern Awareness Network reaffirmed its support for the efforts being made by our government and military in combating insecurity, adding that they remained resolute in their belief that, with sustained commitment and understanding of our obligations under the law, we can ultimately achieve a safer and more secure North-West.

The commissioner said: "It is worthy to note that a total of 329,092 households were displaced by floods in the state, 858,311 farmlands submerged, while a number of people lost their lives.

AYCF Commend Successful Conduct of Governorship Election In Edo State

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its exemplary conduct during the recent governorship election in Edo State.

According to the forums President General Yerima Shettima in a statement, the successful delivery of a fair, free, and credible electoral process signifies a pivotal advancement in Nigeria's democratic experience, reinforcing the foundations upon which our governance system stands.

He said, the credibility of an election is paramount to fostering public confidence in the electoral process, and INEC has demonstrated its commitment to this principle. By ensuring transparency, inclusivity, and the proper adherence to electoral laws, the Commission has set a commendable standard that other states can emulate.

Shettima also said,  the deployment of efficient electoral technology and the systematic training of personnel contributed significantly to enhancing the integrity of the electoral process, showcasing INEC's dedication to improvement and reform.

Moreover, the peaceful conduct of voters and the relative absence of electoral violence are indicative of the growing maturity of Nigeria's political culture. The participation of citizens and stakeholders in a peaceful and orderly manner highlights a collective aspiration for progress and stability within the region, he stressed.

"The AYCF believes that this trend, if maintained, will invigorate public trust and encourage greater electoral participation in future elections.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the winner of the polls, whose election is a clear reflection of the choice made by the electorate. In light of this victory, we urge the newly elected governor to embrace the spirit of magnanimity, fostering an inclusive administration that seeks to heal the divisions experienced during the campaign period.

"In a time when society finds itself polarized by political differences, it is the responsibility of elected officials to build bridges, prioritize unity, and work for the common good of all citizens.

"We commend the professionalism displayed by the security agencies during the electoral process, particularly the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigerian Army. The effective supervision by these institutions was instrumental in ensuring the safety of voters and the orderly conduct of the election. Their presence not only provided security but also bolstered public confidence in the electoral process.

"The AYCF applauds their efforts and reinforces our belief in the importance of a well-coordinated security system that upholds democracy".

The Forum however expressed their disappointment with the reaction of the candidates who fell short at the polls in the wake of the election, stressing that the unfortunate display of a lack of sportsmanship is unbecoming of aspiring leaders.

It stated further that, "Politics should be an arena of ideas and constructive engagement, not one characterized by bitterness and unnecessary dissent. The partisan expressions that followed the announcement of election results reflect the need for a more profound understanding of democratic principles. Contestants must recognize that in every election, there is only one winner, and it is imperative to respect the decision made by the electorate.

"Particularly concerning is the reaction from representatives of the Labour Party. Their campaign, heavily reliant on online media presence, failed to resonate meaningfully with the electorate. It is noteworthy that such platforms, while they can mobilize, seldom translate into tangible electoral success unless they connect with the grassroots.

"The outcome of this election is indicative of the reality that aspirants must align their strategies with the true sentiments and needs of the people on the ground, rather than solely relying on digital narratives. We also find it perplexing that the outgoing governor, who has previously secured two electoral victories, would not express gratitude for his support base, which has sustained his political journey thus far.

"Political wins are never singular achievements; they are collaborative efforts, forged by the trust and dedication of the populace. Acknowledgment of such support is not only courteous but essential for fostering enduring relationships with constituents.

"As the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, we remain committed to the advancement and unity of Nigeria. We advocate for constructive dialogue and a political culture that recognizes the strength in diversity, whether in opinion or perspective. In the spirit of moving forward, we encourage all political stakeholders to prioritize the welfare of the citizenry above personal ambitions, thereby advancing our democratic ideals".

Shettima congratulated the newly elected governor of Edo State once again while commending the security forces for their crucial role, and called for a renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence and collaboration among all political actors in the state.

Elated by proactive measures taken to eliminate bandits in the northwest region, the National Forum for Peace and Unity (NFPU) has urged the Minister of State for Defence , Bello Matawalle to remain focused and avoid distractions on his avoid commitment to rid the country of bandits and other criminal elements.

According the forum, the intensified efforts by the federal government to rid the North-west of the menace of banditry, kidnapping and other forms of terrorism is gradually yielding results .

The Minister of State for Defence,Bello Matawalle, on September 3,sought the

support of Sokoto State Government and citizens to execute President Bola Tinubu's directive to flush out bandits and other criminals terrorising the North-West.

The National Forum for Peace and Unity in a press statement signed by the  coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmadu Dambata, passed a vote of confidence on Matawalle and called on Zamfara State Governor, Alhaji Dauda Lawal to stop the blame game over the insecurity challenges in the State and join together with his predecessor and Minister of Defence, former Governor Bello Mattawalle.

While stating that,"The people of Zamfara State are tired of frequent  killings, kidnappings and threats of attack on communities that fail to contribute money to bandits, it said, those who accused Matawalle of having ties with bandits and the ones finding it different to face the reality of the feat achieved in the fight against banditry.

AYCF asks EFCC To Come Clean Over Handling Of Former Governor Yahaya Bello's Case

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) reacting to recent troubling incidents involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and its treatment of Former Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has called on the anti graft agency  to come clean in the matter.

AYCF said, it finds the actions of the EFCC on the 18th of September, 2024, alarming and deserving of serious public scrutiny because reports has it that former governor popularly known as GYB, voluntarily presented himself to the EFCC's office, complying with all due processes and protocols expected from a citizen facing scrutiny.

A statement issued by the forum's President General Yerima Shettima said, instead of engaging him (GYB) in a meaningful dialogue aimed at clarifying any allegations against him, the EFCC inexplicably failed to follow through, opting instead to plan a heavy-handed operation reminiscent of state-sponsored intimidation.

"The subsequent heavy armed surveillance at the Kogi State Government Lodge in Abuja, including sporadic gunfire purportedly associated with the EFCC's operatives, not only jeopardizes the safety of GYB but also sends a chilling message regarding the agency's commitment to impartiality and fairness.

"This behavior poses fundamental questions about the EFCC’s operational integrity and its motivations in targeting specific individuals, particularly those from minority ethnic groups.

Moreover, the disparity in the treatment of different political figures raises eyebrows.

"While GYB was met with armed siege, it is notable that the EFCC exhibited a vastly different demeanor when the former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, reported to its office amidst a crowd of supporters. This inconsistency indicates an alarming bias that must not only be addressed but also rectified".

Shettima queried: what are the true intentions behind these maneuvers by the EFCC? What criteria are they using to determine who is subjected to their procedural scrutiny? The selective operational tactics employed by the EFCC creates the unsettling notion that the agency may be acting under undue influence, serving certain interests rather than fulfilling its paramount duty to uphold justice and equity for all Nigerians.

The AYCF however said, it  remained resolute in its call for transparency and accountability in the actions of public institutions, especially those tasked with fighting corruption, adding that former Governors with cases to answer, regardless of their ethnic affiliations or political connections, must be treated with the same level of scrutiny. "It is unacceptable for the EFCC, under the leadership of Mr. Olu Olukoyede, to overlook significant financial misappropriations involving individuals from certain ethnic backgrounds while escalating attacks against others".

Shettima also said, the alarming atmosphere of intimidation fostered by the EFCC must be addressed with urgency. "We are particularly concerned about the safety and well-being of GYB in light of these developments. It is imperative that the Nigerian government and relevant authorities take immediate action to protect him and ensure that due process is followed.

"Moreover, we wish to convey our concerns to international community members regarding the concerning patterns of selective justice and the potential implications for human rights. We urge global organizations and foreign governments to monitor these developments closely as we collectively champion the cause of justice for all Nigerians.

"In conclusion, as we heed the words of General Omar N. Bradley, let us remember that a failure to prevent unjust actions can lead to dire consequences".

AYCF reiterated it's firm stand against any misuse of power by the EFCC or any other institution against the people of Kogi State or any state in Nigeria.
