Arewa Group Rejects Sympathy Claims as Bauchi Officials Face Corruption, Terror-Financing Trial

The Arewa Joint Initiative for Peace has urged Nigerians to disregard what it described as sympathy-seeking narratives surrounding serious corruption and terrorism-financing allegations against top officials of the Bauchi State Government.

In a statement signed by its President, Julius Danlami, the group referenced the recent arraignment of senior state officials, including the Commissioner for Finance, Yakubu Adamu, before the Federal High Court in Abuja over charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

According to the group, the charges — reportedly bordering on conspiracy, diversion of public funds and alleged terrorism financing — raise grave governance and national security concerns that should not be diluted by political rhetoric.

The Arewa group said it was disturbed by public remarks credited to Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, suggesting that the prosecution of officials in his administration was politically motivated, allegedly due to his refusal to align with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Describing such claims as an attempt to deflect attention from the substance of the allegations, the organisation warned that framing judicial processes as political persecution could weaken public confidence in democratic institutions and the rule of law.

“Allegations involving the conversion of public resources and the financing of terrorism go beyond routine political disputes,” the statement said. “They strike at the heart of public trust, national security and moral responsibility, especially in a region that has endured prolonged violence and instability.”

While acknowledging that a sitting governor enjoys constitutional immunity, the group stressed that immunity does not amount to impunity, insisting that judicial processes must proceed without interference or emotional manipulation.

The organisation further cautioned Nigerians against allowing sympathy narratives to overshadow accountability, urging citizens to demand transparency and ethical leadership from public office holders.

It also called on the judiciary to ensure the expeditious handling of the case, warning that undue delays could deepen public distrust and fuel misinformation.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to peace, justice and good governance, maintaining that serious allegations of corruption and terrorism financing must be addressed through due process, not political sentiment.

AJIP Declares Unwavering Support For Matawalle Amid Baseless Calls For His Removal

The Arewa Joint Initiative for Peace (AJIP) said it stands resolutely against the ongoing, unfounded calls for the removal of Bello Matawalle from his esteemed position as Minister of Defence.

The group viewed such plan as a misguided attempts, allegedly bankrolled by Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, are not only a disservice to the progress we have made in the fight against insecurity but also a blatant attempt to undermine the integrity of our national leadership and the unity of the North.

A statement issued by the group and signed by the.direvtor general Musa Danbaki, said it is imperative to recognize that the recent political maneuvers by Governor Lawal are rooted in desperation.

"As a leader who has consistently aligned himself with bandit leaders, Lawal's efforts to discredit Minister Matawalle stem from a fear of exposure. Matawalle has been a stalwart advocate for peace and security in our region, tirelessly working to dismantle the networks of violence that have plagued our communities.

"His commitment to transparency and accountability threatens the very foundations of Lawal’s alliances, compelling the Governor to seek distractions through baseless allegations against a man who has dedicated his life to the service of our nation".

The AJIP said it firmly believe that these calls for Matawalle's removal are not merely personal attacks; they are part of a broader political strategy to destabilize the support structure for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's 2027 re-election campaign.

By targeting Matawalle, who has emerged as a key pillar of support for the President in the North, detractors aim to weaken the administration's efforts to foster stability and growth in the region. We must not allow such divisive tactics to succeed, the group stated.

According to the group, Minister Matawalle has demonstrated unwavering dedication to his role, implementing policies that have significantly improved the security landscape in Nigeria, adding that  under his stewardship, we have witnessed a concerted effort to engage communities, empower local leaders, and create sustainable pathways to peace.

"His initiatives have not only aimed to combat banditry but also to address the socio-economic factors that fuel unrest. It is this comprehensive approach that has earned him the respect and admiration of many, both within and outside the region.

"As we reflect on the current political climate, it is crucial to reaffirm our solidarity with President Tinubu and the administration’s vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria. The Arewa Joint Initiative for Peace stands united in our belief that a cohesive and supportive leadership is essential for navigating the challenges we face. We recognize that the path to peace is fraught with obstacles, but it is only through unity and collaboration that we can overcome them.

"In light of these circumstances, we call upon all stakeholders to reject the divisive rhetoric being propagated by those who seek to undermine our collective progress. It is vital that we focus on fostering dialogue, supporting our leaders, and working together to build a future that is free from the shadows of violence and insecurity".

The strength of our region lies in our ability to unite against common threats, and we must not allow personal vendettas to distract us from the greater good, the statement added.

"The Arewa Joint Initiative for Peace extends our unwavering support to Minister Bello Matawalle and commends him for his tireless efforts to bring about lasting change. We urge the public to remain vigilant against misinformation and to stand firm in their support for leaders who prioritize the welfare of our communities over personal ambitions. Together, we can forge a path toward a more secure and prosperous future for all Nigerians.

"We call on the citizens of Zamfara State and the broader Northern region to rally behind Minister Matawalle and reject the baseless narratives being spun by those with ulterior motives. Let us stand together in solidarity with President Tinubu, reaffirming our commitment to peace, security, and unity in the face of adversity".

Northern Group Welcomes Yakubu’s Nomination as Ambassador

The Northern Awareness Network (NAN) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the nomination of former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, as Nigeria’s ambassador to an unspecified international mission, describing the development as a boost to the nation’s diplomatic profile.

In a statement issued yesterday in Abuja and signed by its Chairman, Salihu Sulaiman, the group said the nomination was a recognition of Yakubu’s “distinguished record of public service” and his “vast experience in global affairs,” which it argued would be invaluable in strengthening Nigeria’s engagement on the international stage.

Sulaiman noted that the former INEC chairman had earned national and international respect during his stewardship at the electoral body, where he championed reforms aimed at improving electoral transparency and deepening democratic processes.

He dismissed concerns raised in some quarters that Yakubu’s new appointment could compromise the independence of INEC, insisting such fears were “misguided and reckless.”

According to him, the neutrality of INEC is anchored on law, institutional safeguards, and multilayered oversight mechanisms—not on the post-service career of any individual.

“INEC’s integrity is not tied to the personal trajectory of any former official,” Sulaiman said. “It is a system strengthened by reforms since 2010, monitored by political parties, civil society organisations, and the media. Democracy rests on institutions, not personalities.”

The group further highlighted Yakubu’s career under four successive presidents—Umaru Musa Yar’adua, Goodluck Jonathan, Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu—as evidence of his professionalism and non-partisan disposition.

It recalled that as Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) between 2007 and 2012, Yakubu initiated reforms that continue to shape the nation’s tertiary education sector. It also pointed to innovations introduced under his leadership during the 2023 general elections, which it said enabled opposition parties to record their highest number of elective positions in the country’s political history.

The Northern Awareness Network urged Nigerians to support the nomination, adding that effective diplomacy required individuals with proven administrative competence and an understanding of Nigeria’s governance architecture.

Sulaiman stressed that rather than question Yakubu’s nomination, Nigerians should focus on strengthening national institutions and reinforcing accountability across all sectors.

“This appointment is an opportunity to present Nigeria’s democratic values to the world with credibility,” he added. “We call on Nigerians to rally behind this development and remain committed to building strong, resilient institutions.”

The statement concluded with the group expressing confidence that Professor Yakubu would bring his “wealth of experience, integrity, and calm leadership” to the diplomatic assignment once confirmed.

Appraising the Unwavering Security Achievements of the Only Teacher-Governor in Nigeria

Written by Ahmed Idris, Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor, Kebbi State

The Election of Comrade Dr Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu and his subsequent swearing-in on May 29, 2023,did not only alter the political landscape of Kebbi State but also reshaped its political narrative, giving future generation a renewed sense of hope and direction.

His unprecedented achievements within just two years in office endeared him to the good people of Kebbi State, including the opposition. This explains why many opposition figures have voluntarily joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) a clear signal of the people desire to return him for a second term.

It is evident to all that Kauran Gwandu has proven that, indeed, a teacher can make a remarkable difference. A teacher and a unionist to the core, Kaura demonstrate a commitment of good governance anchored on inclusive leadership.

As Governor and Chief Security Officer of Kebbi State, Kaura has over the last two years placed security as top of his administration priorities. Upon his assumption of office, several communities in the Southern part of the state had fled their ancestral homes and abandoned their farmlands due to persistent banditry and kidnapping.

Since assumption of office in May 2023, Gov. Nasir Idris has worked tirelessly to improve the security situation across the state. He strengthen the state’s security apparatus, by closely collaborating with the military, police, and other security agencies, enhancing their operational capabilities

Determined to restore normalcy, the Governor put all machineries in place to ensure that displaced people  not only returned to their homes but could also cultivate their farmlands and sleep peacefully without fear.

In line with his security consciousness, Kaura procured over 90 Hilux vehicles and thousands of motorcycles, distributing them to security agencies operating in the state. He also improved welfare package of security personnel and provided assorted security gadgets, equipment, and logistics to support smooth operations across the state.

Benefiting security agencies include the Military, Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Department of Security Service (DSS), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), as well as Vigilante Groups.

Furthermore, upon assumption of office, the Governor swiftly established a military bases in sone strategic areas of Southern Kebbi, particularly in Danko Wasagu and Sakaba Local Government Areas. These two Local Government Areas share borders with Zamfara and Niger States.

Reflecting on the recent abduction of 25 innocent schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area, the Governor acted decisively.

Demonstrating leadership and empathy, he immediately informed the President, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In swift response , President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed the Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu to visit the affected community and ordered the  Minister of State for Defense, Bello Matawalle to relocate to Kebbi and coordinate the rescue operation of the abducted schoolgirls.

With the maximum support from the State Government, the Federal Government and security agencies, the girls were rescued unharmed eight days after their abduction. This success that would not have been possible without the Governor’s unwavering support and commitment

The Governor’s efforts extend far  beyond security. His impact  cuts across agriculture, education, health, infrastructure, youth empowerment and human capital development.

In agriculture, Gov. Nasir Idris has  made remarkable progress, recognising the crucial role of the sector in the state’s economic development. He introduced a comprehensive agricultural strategy aimed at boosting food production, creating job opportunities, and improving farmers livelihoods.

One of the governor’s flagship initiatives is the ‘State Agricultural and Livestock Development Programme,’ is revitalizing the agricultural landscape. Under this initiative, government provided 500 trucks of fertiliser free of charge, distributed solar water pumps, chemicals (insecticides), seeds, and livestock feeds among other inputs. These efforts have already yielded visible results, including increased crop yields and improved food security across the state.

Speaking while reuniting the rescued students to their parents, the Governor said the governor thanked God Almighty for the successful rescue of the girls.

"I am the most happiest person because these girls were safely rescued unharmed. This is a happy day that we have been long awaiting, especially with what happened to our children at Maga school," he said.

The governor recalled that Mr President had directed the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), State Minister of Defense and all security chiefs to coordinate on how to successfully rescue the abducted children.

"These directive has no doubt yielded a positive result. We are here today celebrating an all encompassing success, we are very grateful to Mr President," he said.

The governor advised the freed girls not to be discouraged in the pursuit of western education, instead, they should strive hard to become knowledgeable.

The governor advised the people to do everything possible to ensure that the state live in peace, insisting that no development would be recorded in an atmosphere of rancho, acrimony or breach of peace

Idris described the harmonious relationship being existing between the three former governors of the state and the present governor as a sign progress and togetherness

He observed that the situation was very rare in many states of the federation, saying, "you can see all the three former governors of Kebbi and the present governor sitting together to achieve a common goal."

Yakubu’s Nomination Won’t Affect INEC’s Independence — Northern Stakeholders

The Northern Stakeholders Consultative Initiative (NSCI) has said the nomination of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, for an ambassadorial role will not compromise the commission’s independence or impartiality.

In a statement on Tuesday, the group’s convener, Yerima Shettima, said the concerns being raised in some quarters were “misguided and unnecessary,” insisting that INEC’s autonomy is protected by law and cannot be weakened by the post-service appointment of any of its officials.

Shettima said INEC operates under a system designed to withstand political pressure, adding that its neutrality is reinforced by legal frameworks, public scrutiny and the oversight of political parties, civil society and the media.

“The idea that Professor Yakubu’s nomination can undermine INEC is unfounded,” he said. “INEC’s independence is not tied to one individual. Its processes and safeguards are too strong to be influenced by a future appointment.”

He said critics of the nomination were ignoring the fact that since the 2010 electoral reforms, the commission has been strengthened to function above partisan interest. He said innovations under Yakubu helped deepen the electoral process, noting that the 2023 elections produced major wins for opposition parties across the country.

According to him, the debate has also failed to recognise Yakubu’s long service to the country. He said the INEC chairman had served under four different presidents—Umaru Musa Yar’adua, Goodluck Jonathan, Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu—without questions over his professionalism.

“Professor Yakubu has built a reputation for service,” Shettima said. “His work at TETFUND transformed tertiary education funding, and his reforms at INEC strengthened transparency. His ambassadorial nomination does not negate these facts.”

The group urged political actors to focus on strengthening institutions rather than creating fears around the personal career trajectory of public officials.

“Democracy is built on strong institutions, not on the personalities of those who lead them,” Shettima said.

The NSCI urged political parties, civil society and the media to avoid narratives that could erode public confidence in INEC, saying the commission remains central to Nigeria’s democratic stability.

NAN Alerts Tinubu to Alleged Smear Campaign Against Matawalle

The Northern Awareness Network (NAN) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in what it described as a coordinated smear campaign targeting the Minister of State for Defence, Mohammed Bello Matawalle, warning that the development could unsettle the North’s already fragile security and political climate.

In a statement signed by its chairman, Salihu Sulaiman, the group alleged that following last week’s resignation of the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, “certain political actors” had intensified efforts to discredit Matawalle for what it called “purely political motives.”

NAN claimed that the backlash was part of a broader scheme aimed at weakening President Tinubu’s support base in the North ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to Sulaiman, intelligence available to the organisation suggested that Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, was linked to activities allegedly designed to mobilise unrest and fuel protests against the minister — a move it warned could escalate tensions in the North-West.

“These machinations are clearly designed to destabilise the region and erode the President’s strong support base,” the group said. “The President must be wary of anyone seeking to weaken his administration through orchestrated attacks on loyal allies like Matawalle.”

NAN also drew parallels between ongoing security anxieties in Kebbi State and the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction in Borno State, warning that any missteps in managing the current situation could trigger political ripple effects.

The group said Matawalle had demonstrated commitment to stabilising the North’s security landscape and had earned public trust across several communities.

“Northern Nigeria stands united in appreciating Matawalle’s efforts. His initiatives have yielded tangible results, and attempts to smear him are mere distractions from the real issues,” the statement added.

NAN urged President Tinubu to publicly reaffirm his confidence in Matawalle, describing the minister as “a key pillar” in sustaining political cohesion and public confidence in the region. It cautioned that sidelining him would amount to “a strategic miscalculation” ahead of the next general elections.

The group also called on the presidency to openly dismiss what it described as “baseless and politically motivated attacks,” insisting that the smear campaign was detrimental to both national security efforts and the stability of the North.

France Assures Deepening Ties With Nigeria, Reaffirms Global Commitment to Peace

…France has reaffirmed its commitment to peace, unity, and multilateral cooperation as the French Embassy in Abuja joined the world to commemorate Armistice Day, marking 107 years since the end of the First World War.

The solemn ceremony, held on Tuesday, recognised the sacrifices of French soldiers and all who died for the Republic — not only during the First World War but also in other conflicts around the world — in defence of liberty, democracy, and human dignity.

The French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, who led the ceremony, said it was a solemn reminder of the cost of peace and the duty of nations to preserve it. Fonbaustier praised the bravery of soldiers who fought for the Republic, saying their sacrifices embody the very spirit of France — courage, honour, and service to humanity. “France remembers not only those who fell on the fields of Europe but also those who fought and died in Africa, Asia, and beyond,” he stated.

Fonbaustier also reaffirmed France’s strong partnership with Nigeria and its continued commitment to multilateral cooperation, peacekeeping, and humanitarian support in Africa and worldwide. He noted that both nations share a vision of stability and mutual respect built on dialogue and democratic values. “France stands with Nigeria and all peace-loving nations in defending the ideals of freedom and human dignity,” he added.

Speaking at the event, the Defence Attaché of France to Nigeria, Colonel Stéphane Useo, stated that the commemoration represents more than mere remembrance; it reflects France’s enduring commitment to promoting peace and upholding shared human values. He said, “Every year, generations gather before the monuments of our towns and villages, united in remembrance and strengthened in our shared purpose — to build a world where liberty, security, and dignity are guaranteed for all.”

Useo paid tribute to the courage and selflessness of French soldiers through the ages, noting that their sacrifices continue to define the strength and values of the French Republic. He also shared a personal reflection, revealing that members of his own family were among those who experienced the horrors of war. “For my family, as for many French families, war was not distant history — it was lived experience. It taught us that freedom is never free, and that peace must always be defended,” he said.

He further highlighted the symbolism of the Unknown Soldier beneath the Arc de Triomphe and the Bleuet de France, the blue cornflower that has represented solidarity with veterans since 1925. The Defence Attaché described the flower as “a small but powerful emblem of compassion, resilience, and unity.”

The ceremony concluded with the laying of wreaths and a moment of silence at the embassy’s memorial plaque, as France renewed its message that remembrance is not only about honouring the past but also about sustaining the collective resolve to secure a peaceful and united future.

Kebbi Government Dismisses Claim that Abduction of Schoolgirls in Maga Occurred in a Christian Enclave

The Kebbi State Government has dismissed as false and misleading the claim by Rep. Riley M. Moore, member of the United States Congress that the tragic incident that occurred on Monday at Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State occurred in a “Christian enclave”.

This claim, reported by the Daily Post of Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2025, is entirely untrue and clear misrepresentation of facts. Maga is a predominantly dominated by Muslims community, and the majority of the abducted students are Muslims which is contrary to the claim made by the American lawmaker.

According to the report, the lawmaker’s reaction focused on the vulnerability of communities that have experienced repeated acts of violence in recent years. This is factually incorrect. Banditry in Northwestern Nigeria  has overwhelmingly affected Muslim communities. These criminal groups do not discriminate based on religion.

On different occasion, these bandits attacked and kill Muslims in their places of worship, more than the Christians.

A recent example  is the attack on Muslim worshippers in a village near Malumfashi in Katsina State, where several people were killed inside a mosque during prayers.

If these bandits were driven by religious motives, why then do they attack and kill Muslim while praying in mosque?

It is pertinent to note that the American lawmaker has either been misinformed or has chosen to ignore the realities on the ground.

The Kebbi State Government wishes to make it clear to the global community that terrorist in Nigeria target victims indiscriminately irrespective of religion or political affiliation. They attack people in their homes, schools, places of worship and sometimes block roads kill or abduct people on transit.

For over a decade, the predominantly Muslim states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa have endured sustained attacks, killings and displacement caused by the Boko Haram insurgency. The same case in Northwestern states of Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and Kebbi all with large population of Muslims with few population of Christians have suffered more casualties from banditry than any other region.

We therefore urge the lawmaker Rep. Moore  and others making similar claims to kindly verify any information and report from Nigeria properly before making public statements that may further distort facts or fuel misunderstanding.

Northern Youth Council Commends Ministers of Defence, Chief of Defence Staff for Upholding Professional Standard

The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has thrown its support behind the Minister of Defence, Muhammad Badaru, the Minister of State for Defence, Muhammad Bello Matawalle, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General O.O Olukayode, for upholding the professional standard displayed by Navy Lt. AM Yerima in an encounter with the former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of Abuja, Barrister Nyesom Wike.

It would be recalled that Navy Lt. AM Yerima, alongside other naval personnel acting on superior orders, prevented the Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, from gaining access to a landed property belonging to the former Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral AZ Gambo (Rtd), in Abuja.

The young Naval officer conducted himself in accordance with global military standards. He displayed a high level of discipline and decorum, which is the tenet of the military.

Perhaps, Bar. Nyesom Wike forgot that the young officer, Navy Lt. AM Yerima, was not just a Nigerian but a symbol of Nigeria as an entity, and Nigeria as an entity is bigger than any individual, and as such, engaging the young officer in that manner translates to engaging the Nigerian entity. So, what the young officer exhibited needs no condemnation, but rather commendation, accolades, and a call for strict adherence to professional standards in the line of duty.

The composure, the choice of words, and the polite manner in which he responded show that the Nigerian Armed Forces are the home of discipline and decorum.

The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria also condemns the act of National Youth Council of Nigeria for writing a letter apologizing to the FCT minister Bar Nyesom Wike. The Minister should know that the letter wasn't written with the consent of the Nigerian Youth.

As a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Bar Nyesom Wike knows better that the officer has not erred in anyway.

We therefore calls on all office holders, including politicians and Nigerians, to always prioritize the Nigerian entity above any other interest.

Arewa 100% Focus Condemns Victimisation of Dangote Refinery

A northern socio-political and economic advocacy group, Arewa 100% Focus, has condemned what it described as the victimisation and orchestrated hostility against the Dangote Refinery and its founder, Alhaji Aliko Dangote.

In a statement signed by its president, Hon. Abubakar Sadiq Sa’ad (Fakai), the group said the ongoing dispute between the Dangote Group and PENGASSAN, along with other forms of antagonism directed at Dangote, was unjust and against the national interest.

The group said rather than persecution, the industrialist deserves national recognition and respect for his contributions to Nigeria’s economic transformation and industrial development.

“Such hostility toward a man whose vision, enterprise, and investments have catalysed Nigeria’s industrial transformation is unpatriotic and detrimental to national interest,” the statement read.

Arewa 100% Focus also denounced what it termed deliberate attempts to sabotage or discredit the Dangote Refinery through misinformation and economic hostility, warning that such actions could undermine a strategic national asset.

The group described the Dangote Refinery as a symbol of national pride and a testament to African innovation and industrial capacity, noting that the facility had played a vital role in addressing Nigeria’s downstream petroleum challenges and promoting self-sufficiency.

It called on the Federal Government and relevant regulatory bodies to protect the refinery from undue interference, intimidation, or sabotage, stressing that the refinery represents a critical pillar of Nigeria’s industrial sustainability.

The group further appealed to the media and civil society organisations to uphold fairness and responsibility in their coverage of issues surrounding the refinery, cautioning against manipulative narratives that could erode public confidence.

“Responsible reportage is essential to protect one of Africa’s greatest industrial achievements and prevent the erosion of public trust in a project that holds immense national value,” the group said.

Arewa 100% Focus reaffirmed its commitment to continuous advocacy, public enlightenment, and monitoring of developments affecting the refinery, adding that it would continue to support policies that promote industrial transformation and job creation.

The group said it would also engage with relevant stakeholders to ensure that Nigeria’s private sector continues to thrive as a driver of economic growth and national self-reliance.

AICIF 2025: Metropolitan, SEC to Expand Islamic Financing Ecosystem in Nigeria

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Nigeria has pledged to deepen the country’s non-interest finance market in partnership with Metropolitan Skills Limited and Metropolitan Law Firm. As Africa’s leading Islamic finance platform, the African International Conference on Islamic Finance (AICIF) convened its 2025 Pitch Competition in Abuja on Saturday.

The event, held in Abuja, was part of the pre-conference activities leading up to the 7th AICIF, scheduled for November. It brought together innovators, regulators, investors, and entrepreneurs under the theme: “Africa Emerging: A Prosperous and Inclusive Outlook.”

Delivering her opening remarks, Ummahani Ahmad Amin, Conference Chair and Chairman, Board of Directors of Metropolitan Skills Limited, said the collaboration with SEC was a “historic step” for positioning Nigeria at the centre of Africa’s ethical finance revolution.

“Together, we are working to strengthen the foundation of Islamic finance across Africa, expanding its reach into the capital markets to create new opportunities for inclusive and sustainable growth,” she said.

“Islamic finance is not just an abstract set of ideals. Its principles of fairness, risk-sharing, and social responsibility are practical tools for building economies that serve people, not just profits.”

For the SEC, the collaboration signals its commitment to broadening Nigeria’s financial ecosystem. Abdulkadir Abbas, Director at the SEC, told PRNigeria that the regulator has already developed a robust framework for non-interest capital markets.

“As regulators of the capital market, we are keen on developing all segments, including non-interest finance. We have frameworks that cover fintechs, crowdfunding, and even Sharia-compliant tokenisation. This partnership allows us to create awareness, attract innovators, and build a resilient, ethical finance system in Nigeria,” Abbas said.

He further highlighted the SEC’s 10-year master plan for non-interest finance, which is set to expire this year, noting that the regulator had introduced innovative products such as Sukuk to support infrastructure financing.

Ms Yinlaifa Edolo, Managing Director of Metropolitan Skills Ltd., explained that hosting the pitch competition ahead of the leading conference reflects Metropolitan’s resolve to build an ecosystem where ethical finance drives real innovation.

“The N5 million grant is not just a prize. It serves as seed capital for transforming bold ideas into enterprises that can reshape entire industries. Our focus is to inspire startups, support small businesses, and show that halal and ethical finance can power inclusive growth in Africa,” she said.

Backing this view, Abimbola Ajinibi, Regional Manager, First Trustees, a longtime partner of Metropolitan, said the last decade has witnessed a remarkable transformation in Nigeria’s Islamic finance space.

“Ten years ago, there was little awareness about instruments like Waqf, Sukuk, or ethical crowdfunding. Today, we have federal and state Sukuk projects worth over a trillion naira financing roads, schools, and hospitals. We’ve moved from theory to real impact,” he said.

Industry experts believe that by incorporating Islamic finance principles into Africa’s economic development, countries like Nigeria can establish more resilient financial systems that address unemployment, poverty, and inequality while remaining competitive in global markets.

As preparations build up to the November AICIF conference, the Abuja pitch competition has set the stage for regulators, innovators, and investors to work together in driving Africa’s halal economy and advancing inclusive prosperity.

Islamic Banking: 20 Bold Innovative Startups Compete for ₦5m in AICIF Pitch Challenge

The 2025 African International Conference on Islamic Finance (AICIF) Pitch Competition has highlighted 20 innovative startups competing for ₦5 million in grants, as Africa accelerates its efforts to nurture ethical, impact-driven enterprises.

Held in Abuja on Saturday as a precursor to the 7th AICIF scheduled for November, the competition drew over 200 applications from across the continent before narrowing down to 20 finalists—10 focused on tech innovations and 10 on social impact.

Speaking at the event, Hajia Ummahani Ahmad Amin, Convener of AICIF Nigeria and Managing Partner at Metropolitan Law Firm, described the initiative as more than just a contest.

“Today, we celebrate creativity, resilience, and the power of ideas. These young entrepreneurs are not just pitching businesses; they are presenting Africa’s future. Their solutions can create jobs, reshape industries, and drive social impact,” she said.

The startups—ranging from halal-tech platforms to ethical investment solutions—were assessed by a panel of judges on innovation, scalability, and alignment with Islamic finance principles.

Mr Abdulkadir Abbas, Director at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), praised the quality of entries, noting:

“The passion, commitment, and innovation displayed are remarkable. It will be a tough task for the judges to choose winners. What we are witnessing here is the essence of ethical entrepreneurship.”

Abbas added that the SEC has already created frameworks for small businesses to access funding through crowdfunding and other Sharia-compliant instruments, underscoring the regulator’s commitment to the non-interest finance sector.

For Ms Yinlaifa Edolo, Managing Director of Metropolitan Skills Ltd, the competition provides breathing space for startups to scale responsibly.

“This grant is not about loans or debts. It is about giving entrepreneurs room to innovate, grow, and build businesses grounded in fairness and social responsibility,” she explained.

Mr Abimbola Ajinibi, Associate Director at First Trustees, emphasised the importance of focusing on SMEs:

“Small businesses are Africa’s economic backbone, but often lack access to affordable capital. By leveraging halal finance instruments like Waqf, Sukuk, and ethical crowdfunding, we can help them expand without exploitative interest rates.”

One finalist, reflecting on the opportunity, called the experience “life-changing”:

“Access to funding is the biggest barrier for startups like ours. This competition doesn’t just provide money—it gives us visibility, mentorship, and credibility.”

Since its inception in 2018, AICIF has grown into Africa’s leading Islamic finance platform, uniting policymakers, regulators, academics, and entrepreneurs. The pitch competition, now in its 7th edition, reinforces its mission of mainstreaming ethical finance while fueling innovation that serves communities.

As judges deliberate and finalists await the announcement of winners, the atmosphere is charged with hope that some of Africa’s boldest innovators will soon transform their ideas into enterprises capable of reshaping the continent’s economic and social future.
