Ohanaeze youth worldwide warns EFCC against sponsored prosecution of Yahyah Bello

By Editor

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, not to allow itself to be used in persecuting the immediate past governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

Calls for Bello’s trial have intensified since he left office, with the state government coming out to say that no money belonging to the state is missing.

Reacting to the development, the Igbo group wondered why Bello was being dragged into a financial probe of transactions that occurred in 2015, well before the former governor assumed office.

In a statement made available to journalists, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike said the EFCC should stop turning itself into a tool for political witch-hunt.

He noted that the commission had formed the habit of harassing governors once they leave office but nothing comes out of such exercise.

According to him, “it has become a tradition that once a governor leaves office, the EFCC will unleash its operatives on the person; this will be followed with all manner of media trials after which nothing comes out of it.

"In the case of ex-governor Yahaya Bello, we are very much aware that he took over power in January 2016; it then beats imagination that he is being dragged into a probe of financial dealings in 2015. This is curious to say the least.

"This is one of such instances where the EFCC ends up making drama and vilifying innocent personalities.

“We have witnessed several such scenarios in the past, but at the end of the day, no conviction. This is primarily because the commission does not do any proper investigation before carrying out arrests and media trials.

“The immediate past governor of Kogi State should not for any reason be served such a treatment. The commission should not allow itself to be dragged into the APC politics.

“We also wish to advise the commission to stop the media trial of not just ex-governor Bello but any other person. Cases are won in courts and not on pages of newspapers and online platforms.

"We once more commend the ex-governor for his giant strides in Kogi State. He did not disappoint the youths; we will continue to support him in and out of office.

"We laud him for handing over a peaceful Kogi State and for ensuring that all residents are doing their business under a secure environment."

Yahya Bello: Embrace Fairness, Professionalism, AYCF Tells EFCC

By Editor

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) said it has closely observed the events unfolding in Kogi State since the inception of the current administration and noted with utter perplexity and concern, the unrelenting disturbances created by certain interest groups, specifically the continued persecution of former governor Yahaya Bello.

It also averred that the embers of this persistent intimidation and harassment of the former governor were ignited and incessantly fanned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), under the pretext of conducting a fictitious investigation into unsubstantiated and baseless allegations against him.

A statement issued by the President General of the forum, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, he said, the forum finds these actions wholly unacceptable and call on the EFCC to act in a fair and unbiased manner.

According to Shettima, as the representatives of various interest groups from Northern Nigeria, the AYCF has carefully watched and studied these events with considerable restraint and maturity and in order to facilitate a peaceful atmosphere, have condoned and accommodated several unreasonable and unacceptable actions carried out by the EFCC, a government agency that is supposed to be fair and just in its dealings.

He posited however that the AYCF believe that there is a limit to such tolerance, stressing that matters have now reached a point where silence becomes complicity and inaction is no longer an option, adding that the forum is compelled to caution the EFCC to be more professional and unbiased in the discharge of its functions.

"We urge the EFCC to eschew the temptation of serving the dubious political interests of some unscrupulous power mongers. It is essential for the EFCC to regain its credibility and adhere to the principles of fairness, justice, and integrity in all its dealings.

"The AYCF believes in the principle of the rule of law and expects that individuals, regardless of their political affiliations, should be treated with respect and given a fair opportunity to defend themselves against any allegations. It is in the interest of justice and the preservation of fundamental human rights that we call on the EFCC to conduct its investigations in a fair and unbiased manner.

Shettima restated the commitment of AYCF to fostering peace and unity in Northern Nigeria and therefore called on all stakeholders to support the AYCF's stance in urging the EFCC to embrace fairness and professionalism in the discharge of its responsibilities.

Stop The Witch Hunt, Arewa Network Caution EFCC Over Yahaya Bello

By Editor

The Northern Emancipation Network (NEN) has strongly condemned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for what it calls a witch hunt against the former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.

In a statement released today, NEN Chairman, Suleiman Abbah, expressed concern over the ongoing intimidation and harassment of Governor Bello, stating that such actions are unacceptable.

The group pointed out that the original charge against Yahaya Bello alleges his involvement in a conspiracy to convert funds belonging to the Kogi State Government. However, the NEN highlights that this offense is said to have occurred in September 2015, before Bello even assumed office as Governor.

The group argues that accusing him of a crime that occurred before he held the position is illogical and baseless.

Furthermore, the NEN emphasizes that Governor Bello had no financial dealings with the Kogi State Government prior to his appointment, raising doubts about the validity of these allegations.

The group questions the credibility of the EFCC and its leadership, stating that these ridiculous and indefensible accusations tarnish the agency's reputation and undermine public trust.

The NEN also warns political actors to refrain from interfering in Kogi State affairs and to cease their campaign of calumny. It highlights that the state government has not reported any missing funds and has been recognized for its transparency and accountability both locally and internationally.

The group urges the appropriate authorities to conduct their investigations without undue political influence.

In light of these concerns, the NEN calls on President Tinubu to intervene and safeguard the integrity of the EFCC. The agency should not be manipulated or coerced into engaging in a fight that should be left to politicians.

The President must ensure that the EFCC operates independently and upholds the principles of justice and fairness.

The NEN concludes by urging the EFCC to refocus on its core mandate of combating corruption rather than engaging in baseless pursuits of individuals without substantial evidence. It states that it is time to put an end to this witch hunt and restore faith in the justice system.

Okwu said the Ohanaeze youths took note of Matawalle’s recent efforts, including his recent speech during a meeting of Defence Ministers in Saudi Arabia, where rallied joint support to make the world a better place.

He said that at the meeting, Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Matawalle presented real life experience of Nigeria to the audience, with the hope of finding a lasting solution to Nigeria’s security challenges

He quoted Matawalle as saying during the meeting that, “The threat of terrorism continues to evolve, becoming more complex and widespread. It is imperative that we, as a coalition, stand side by side, combining our resources and expertise to protect our nations and maintain global security.

“Pertinently, it is worthy to reinforce Nigeria’s commitment and the need for a deeper level of partnership in the areas of intelligence sharing, technical support and training to enhance regional and national security.”

Okwu stated that Matawalle’s speech showed that he knows the dynamics of the security issues plaguing the West African sub-region and Africa and the world as a whole.

“The Minister understands that there is a global threat to make the world restless.

“He understands the rudiments of the security crisis we are facing as a nation, which can only be solved with collaboration with our neighbours and other countries of the world.

“We appreciate his efforts and commitment towards ensuring that every part of the country enjoys serenity.

“More importantly is the coordination of the security architecture by the defence minister, hence we have not seen cases of inter-agency rivalry.

“We, Ohanaeze youths, pass a confidence vote on him and urge him to continue the good work he is doing. He is one of the best brains President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assembled to deliver on his ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’.

“Our firm belief is that in no distant time, all his efforts will pay off and the citizens will enjoy a peaceful nation,” the Ohaneaze youths president said.
