AYCF Commend Successful Conduct of Governorship Election In Edo State

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its exemplary conduct during the recent governorship election in Edo State.

According to the forums President General Yerima Shettima in a statement, the successful delivery of a fair, free, and credible electoral process signifies a pivotal advancement in Nigeria's democratic experience, reinforcing the foundations upon which our governance system stands.

He said, the credibility of an election is paramount to fostering public confidence in the electoral process, and INEC has demonstrated its commitment to this principle. By ensuring transparency, inclusivity, and the proper adherence to electoral laws, the Commission has set a commendable standard that other states can emulate.

Shettima also said,  the deployment of efficient electoral technology and the systematic training of personnel contributed significantly to enhancing the integrity of the electoral process, showcasing INEC's dedication to improvement and reform.

Moreover, the peaceful conduct of voters and the relative absence of electoral violence are indicative of the growing maturity of Nigeria's political culture. The participation of citizens and stakeholders in a peaceful and orderly manner highlights a collective aspiration for progress and stability within the region, he stressed.

"The AYCF believes that this trend, if maintained, will invigorate public trust and encourage greater electoral participation in future elections.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the winner of the polls, whose election is a clear reflection of the choice made by the electorate. In light of this victory, we urge the newly elected governor to embrace the spirit of magnanimity, fostering an inclusive administration that seeks to heal the divisions experienced during the campaign period.

"In a time when society finds itself polarized by political differences, it is the responsibility of elected officials to build bridges, prioritize unity, and work for the common good of all citizens.

"We commend the professionalism displayed by the security agencies during the electoral process, particularly the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigerian Army. The effective supervision by these institutions was instrumental in ensuring the safety of voters and the orderly conduct of the election. Their presence not only provided security but also bolstered public confidence in the electoral process.

"The AYCF applauds their efforts and reinforces our belief in the importance of a well-coordinated security system that upholds democracy".

The Forum however expressed their disappointment with the reaction of the candidates who fell short at the polls in the wake of the election, stressing that the unfortunate display of a lack of sportsmanship is unbecoming of aspiring leaders.

It stated further that, "Politics should be an arena of ideas and constructive engagement, not one characterized by bitterness and unnecessary dissent. The partisan expressions that followed the announcement of election results reflect the need for a more profound understanding of democratic principles. Contestants must recognize that in every election, there is only one winner, and it is imperative to respect the decision made by the electorate.

"Particularly concerning is the reaction from representatives of the Labour Party. Their campaign, heavily reliant on online media presence, failed to resonate meaningfully with the electorate. It is noteworthy that such platforms, while they can mobilize, seldom translate into tangible electoral success unless they connect with the grassroots.

"The outcome of this election is indicative of the reality that aspirants must align their strategies with the true sentiments and needs of the people on the ground, rather than solely relying on digital narratives. We also find it perplexing that the outgoing governor, who has previously secured two electoral victories, would not express gratitude for his support base, which has sustained his political journey thus far.

"Political wins are never singular achievements; they are collaborative efforts, forged by the trust and dedication of the populace. Acknowledgment of such support is not only courteous but essential for fostering enduring relationships with constituents.

"As the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, we remain committed to the advancement and unity of Nigeria. We advocate for constructive dialogue and a political culture that recognizes the strength in diversity, whether in opinion or perspective. In the spirit of moving forward, we encourage all political stakeholders to prioritize the welfare of the citizenry above personal ambitions, thereby advancing our democratic ideals".

Shettima congratulated the newly elected governor of Edo State once again while commending the security forces for their crucial role, and called for a renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence and collaboration among all political actors in the state.

Elimination of Bandits:Group Passes Vote of Confidence on Matawalle

Elated by proactive measures taken to eliminate bandits in the northwest region, the National Forum for Peace and Unity (NFPU) has urged the Minister of State for Defence , Bello Matawalle to remain focused and avoid distractions on his avoid commitment to rid the country of bandits and other criminal elements.

According the forum, the intensified efforts by the federal government to rid the North-west of the menace of banditry, kidnapping and other forms of terrorism is gradually yielding results .

The Minister of State for Defence,Bello Matawalle, on September 3,sought the

support of Sokoto State Government and citizens to execute President Bola Tinubu's directive to flush out bandits and other criminals terrorising the North-West.

The National Forum for Peace and Unity in a press statement signed by the  coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmadu Dambata, passed a vote of confidence on Matawalle and called on Zamfara State Governor, Alhaji Dauda Lawal to stop the blame game over the insecurity challenges in the State and join together with his predecessor and Minister of Defence, former Governor Bello Mattawalle.

While stating that,"The people of Zamfara State are tired of frequent  killings, kidnappings and threats of attack on communities that fail to contribute money to bandits, it said, those who accused Matawalle of having ties with bandits and the ones finding it different to face the reality of the feat achieved in the fight against banditry.

The statement further reads,"Anyone who wants progress and development of this country should be happy with the actions taken against banditry and stop the unnecessary blame games as well as thr political witch-hunting.

"We all know that banditry in the northwest region , especially Zamfara State requires a united and calculated approached from all stakeholders and former governors of the State to address once and for all.

"We insist that it's not time for political blame game ,but the opportunity to be united and support  the federal government to ensure that bandits are completely eliminated from the region.

"The forum therefore expressed dissatisfaction over the manner the  state government is handling the security of lives and properties in the State and appealed to the Governor to rather explore the opportunity of having his predecessor as a Minister of State for  Defence."

AYCF asks EFCC To Come Clean Over Handling Of Former Governor Yahaya Bello's Case

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) reacting to recent troubling incidents involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and its treatment of Former Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has called on the anti graft agency  to come clean in the matter.

AYCF said, it finds the actions of the EFCC on the 18th of September, 2024, alarming and deserving of serious public scrutiny because reports has it that former governor popularly known as GYB, voluntarily presented himself to the EFCC's office, complying with all due processes and protocols expected from a citizen facing scrutiny.

A statement issued by the forum's President General Yerima Shettima said, instead of engaging him (GYB) in a meaningful dialogue aimed at clarifying any allegations against him, the EFCC inexplicably failed to follow through, opting instead to plan a heavy-handed operation reminiscent of state-sponsored intimidation.

"The subsequent heavy armed surveillance at the Kogi State Government Lodge in Abuja, including sporadic gunfire purportedly associated with the EFCC's operatives, not only jeopardizes the safety of GYB but also sends a chilling message regarding the agency's commitment to impartiality and fairness.

"This behavior poses fundamental questions about the EFCC’s operational integrity and its motivations in targeting specific individuals, particularly those from minority ethnic groups.

Moreover, the disparity in the treatment of different political figures raises eyebrows.

"While GYB was met with armed siege, it is notable that the EFCC exhibited a vastly different demeanor when the former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, reported to its office amidst a crowd of supporters. This inconsistency indicates an alarming bias that must not only be addressed but also rectified".

Shettima queried: what are the true intentions behind these maneuvers by the EFCC? What criteria are they using to determine who is subjected to their procedural scrutiny? The selective operational tactics employed by the EFCC creates the unsettling notion that the agency may be acting under undue influence, serving certain interests rather than fulfilling its paramount duty to uphold justice and equity for all Nigerians.

The AYCF however said, it  remained resolute in its call for transparency and accountability in the actions of public institutions, especially those tasked with fighting corruption, adding that former Governors with cases to answer, regardless of their ethnic affiliations or political connections, must be treated with the same level of scrutiny. "It is unacceptable for the EFCC, under the leadership of Mr. Olu Olukoyede, to overlook significant financial misappropriations involving individuals from certain ethnic backgrounds while escalating attacks against others".

Shettima also said, the alarming atmosphere of intimidation fostered by the EFCC must be addressed with urgency. "We are particularly concerned about the safety and well-being of GYB in light of these developments. It is imperative that the Nigerian government and relevant authorities take immediate action to protect him and ensure that due process is followed.

"Moreover, we wish to convey our concerns to international community members regarding the concerning patterns of selective justice and the potential implications for human rights. We urge global organizations and foreign governments to monitor these developments closely as we collectively champion the cause of justice for all Nigerians.

"In conclusion, as we heed the words of General Omar N. Bradley, let us remember that a failure to prevent unjust actions can lead to dire consequences".

AYCF reiterated it's firm stand against any misuse of power by the EFCC or any other institution against the people of Kogi State or any state in Nigeria.

Yoruba council wants Zamfara Governor sacked after attacking Matawalle

The Yoruba Youth Council, (YYC) has called on the Zamfara State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Dauda Lawal over his alleged shoddy handling of the deteriorating security situation in their troubled state.

This is even as the youth council caution the Governor to stop attacking the Minister of State for Defence and his predecessor, Alhaji Bello Matawalle.

The ethnic group also deplored the alleged refusal by the Governor to work in harmony with the Minister in the ongoing sweeping efforts by the military to crush the escalating banditry, and thus the worrisome insecurity ravaging the state.

The YYC in a statement issued by its President, Comrade Eric Oluwole, said ,"It is appalling and unacceptable that rather than cooperate with the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in crushing the worsening banditry in his state, he is the one fuelling the bandits in their bloody attacks which have claimed many lives because his is not a listening Governor

According to Oluwole: "Information reaching us through a document in a social media shows that the Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, on July 2, 2024, approved a whopping N1.378 billion "to finance the state government reconciliation programme with bandits in order to bring the menace to an end".

"The money was to be shared to five notorious banditry kingpins including Kachalla Dogu Dide (N200 million); Kachalla Bello Turji (N200m); Ado Alero (N200m): Kachalla Halilu Sububu (N150m); and Gwaska Dan Karami ((N150m).

Among the quoted beneficiaries of the largesse were also six "media promoters" including a prominent online media outfit (N100m); Jackson Ude (N150m); Bashir Hadejia (N100m); Shaibu Mungadi (N50m); Tijani Lamaran (N50m); and Danbiliki Kwawanda (N20m).

Governor Lawal, it was learnt approved the above money as shared, from the State Security Trust Fund following a request on June 30, 2024 by the Secretary to the State Government, Mal. Abubakar Nakwanda.

He had asked the governor to "Direct the state Ministry of Finance to release the said amount for distribution to the beneficiaries listed above as a matter of urgency."

Oluwole said: "We think that Dauda Lawal should be impeached as the Governor of Zamfara State in view of his conivance with, and funding of bandits with state resources to fund the reign of terror in his state.

"Regrettably still, recently, the Yoruba Youths Council monitored Governor Lawal's interview on a TV station calling for the resignation of Alhaji Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence.

"We make bold to say that viewing the current situation in Zamfara, Mr Governor could not have accused his predecessor of not doing enough. This is because Alhaji Bello Matawalle has tried his best to work with him, but Governor Dauda Lawal has refused his intervention.

"We expect that the Governor of a state being ravaged by banditry everywhere is not supposed to jeopardise any effort from anywhere to crush banditry and restore normalcy in the beleaguered state.

"Yoruba youths have been monitoring Zamfara issues over time, and we cannot allow Governor Dauda Lawal to continue molesting Alhaji Bello Matawalle as one of the best Ministers in the administration of Tinubu Government.

"Bello Matawalle has been a man working hard for the good development of Zamfara state."

Oluwole noted the successes recently recorded by the nation's gallant armed forces in the ongoing onslaught against banditry in the North, including the neutralization of the notorious banditry kingpin Halilu Sububu, and the arrest of another gun running banditry kingpin, Bashir Hadejia.

The YYC President recalled the group's   statement on the achievements being recorded by the military in the ongoing battle to crush banditry. It was titled "Governor Dauda Lawal Faces Public Scrutiny Amid Anti-Banditry Operations in Zamfara"

According to the statement:: "In recent months, Zamfara State has been a focal point of concern as significant developments unfold in the ongoing battle against insecurity and lawlessness, primarily attributed to the activities of bandit leaders.

"The arrest of Bashir Hadejiya, a notorious gun running figure, coupled with the neutralization of infamous bandits such as Halilu Sububu, marks an apparent attempt by the state and federal authorities to regain control over a troubling situation that has plagued local communities for years.

"However, these positive strides have been overshadowed by the increasingly complex dynamics between political leadership and public sentiment, particularly regarding Governor Dauda Lawal's governance.

"As Yoruba Youths Council, it is our duty to scrutinize the current state of affairs in Zamfara. The state's precarious situation has intensified scrutiny of Governor Lawal's role amid the enduring efforts led by the Defence Minister, Bello Mohammed Matawalle.

The apparent successes in the offensive against banditry should ideally foster a climate of collaboration and unity among leaders. Yet, the observable discord between Lawal and Matawalle signals an unsettling narrative where personal grievances threaten the integrity and efficacy of collective efforts in curbing violence and insecurity.

"The political landscape in Zamfara has become fraught, dominated by a palpable sense of urgency and frustration. Governor Lawal's recent public outbursts targeting Minister Matawalle not only highlight his dissatisfaction but also project a deeper unease regarding the trajectory of governance in the state.

"The tone and context of these exchanges suggest an authoritarian shift that is deeply troubling. Governance, at its core, hinges on collaboration and mutual respect among state actors, particularly in situations of crisis where the populace's welfare hangs in the balance.

"The diverging paths of these leaders could undermine progress and instill a climate of uncertainty among the populace, raising serious concerns about Lawal's approach to leadership during such a crucial period.

"The sentiments emanating from the State House and the streets of Zamfara reflect a growing sentiment of distrust among citizens regarding the Governor's intentions and capabilities. As perceptions shift towards the belief that Governor Lawal may be part of the problem rather than a solution, the potential for societal discontent rises exponentially.

"When the populace begins to view their leaders as impediments to peace and security, it sets a perilous precedent that can lead to widespread instability.

"The historical underpinnings of insecurity in Zamfara cannot be overstated. With years of systemic neglect, coupled with the socio-economic vulnerabilities that have been exacerbated by banditry, the fabric of community safety has been severely weakened.

"In light of this, the role of the elected officials, particularly the Governor, should pivot towards fostering unity, engaging in dialogue with security operatives, and enhancing the participatory role of civil society organizations. It is critical for Governor Lawal to recalibrate his approach, moving from a place of distress and antagonism towards one characterized by collaboration and strategic planning.

"Furthermore, the current political tension poses the risk of diverting attention from the pressing needs of Zamfara’s citizens—needs that range from security to healthcare and education. An unchecked escalation of rivalry between key leaders can distract from fundamental governance issues, leaving the populace vulnerable.

"As such, it is imperative for Governor Lawal to demonstrate a commitment to addressing the root causes of insecurity rather than engaging in personal conflicts that detract from his responsibilities.Recent developments in Zamfara State, notably the arrest of key figures involved in gunrunning and banditry, have opened a window of opportunity for restoring law and order.

"However, this window may close quickly if political dynamics are allowed to devolve into a cycle of dispute and accusation. Governor Dauda Lawal's current posture, underscored by recent public statements, raises critical questions about his vision for the state amid these tumultuous times.

"It is our prerogative and responsibility to urge for a unifying approach that cultivates trust, collaboration, and above all, prioritizes the welfare of the people of Zamfara. The stakes are high, and decisive leadership is imperative now more than ever."

The Honourable Commissioner of Works, Hon. Abdullahi Muslim, disclosed this in Birnin Kebbi on Friday.

He therefore, warned individuals, private and public motorists to keep-off the road in view of the dangers involved until after repairs.

Hon. Muslim observed that the advice became imperative to ensure safety of lives and property of citizens in the state.

The commissioner assured the general public of the state government's quick response through his ministry to ensure that "the bridge is reconstructed for public use and safety."

Northern Stakeholders Demand Resignation Of Zamfara Governor Lawal

Northern Stakeholders Consultative Forum (NSCF) following recent developments within the political landscape of Zamfara State viz+a-viz statements made by Governor Dauda Lawal regarding Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle has called on  the governor to resign as he has failed to provide needed governance but engaging in ble games.

According to.the forum in a statement issued by the convener Comrade Danjuma Paul said, the Governor’s call for the resignation of Minister Matawalle is not only misplaced but also indicative of a deeper malaise afflicting the governance of Zamfara State, a malaise that can only be remedied by the Governor himself stepping down from his position.

"The allegations surrounding Governor Lawal have reached a critical juncture, particularly in the context of financial misconduct linked to the funding of terror groups. This alleged involvement stands in stark contrast to the demonstrated commitment of Minister Matawalle in addressing the scourge of banditry that has plagued the region.

"A distressing document, circulating within political and civil society circles, has surfaced, chronicling a desperate request to Governor Lawal for an exorbitant sum of One Billion, Three Hundred and Seventy-Eight Million Naira. This sum was purportedly allocated for a reconciliation program aimed at brokering peace with notorious bandits, including infamous leaders such as Bello Turji, Dogo Gide, Ado Aliero, Halilu Sububu, and Gwaska Dan Karami".

According to the forum, the implications of these financial negotiations cannot be understated, and they raise critical questions regarding the ethical governance of Zamfara State, hence the notion that taxpayer resources could be directed towards appeasing banditry only further erodes the trust of the citizenry in their elected officials.

"The revelation of such a reconciliation program invites skepticism about Governor Lawal’s commitment to the welfare of the state and its people, particularly as the situation on the ground continues to deteriorate.
Moreover, the recent arrest of Bashir Hadejiya, a former aide to Governor Lawal, on serious charges of gun running and international criminal conspiracy has only compounded the crisis of confidence surrounding the Governor’s administration.

"While Lawal’s desperation appears to grow alongside the security challenges, it is evident that any semblance of authority and credibility is eroding rapidly. In this tumultuous environment, the commendable progress made under the leadership of Minister Matawalle against banditry must be viewed as critical to the restoration of peace and stability in the region".

Minister Matawalle’s recent actions demonstrate a strategic and disciplined approach to combating banditry, which has yielded tangible results, including the elimination of bandit leaders and a significant reduction of violence. These accomplishments should not be overshadowed by politically motivated attacks on key stakeholders engaged in the fight for regional security. Instead of engaging in a divisive narrative that aims to shift culpability, Governor Lawal must reflect on the broader implications of his leadership and the pressing need for accountability.

The NSCF said it firmly believed that for the gains achieved in the fight against banditry to be sustained and for genuine progress to be realized, a shift in leadership is imperative. The call for Governor Lawal’s resignation is not merely a reactionary stance; it is a responsible demand based on the ethical considerations of governance that prioritize the safety and wellbeing of Zamfara’s citizens over political survival.

The forum said, "Should Governor Lawal fail to heed this call for resignation, we will advocate for the imposition of a state of emergency, necessitating his removal from office and the appointment of a military sole administrator. Such a move would ensure that the imperative of restoring security takes precedence over the inadequacies of a faltering political administration".

The NSCF called upon all stakeholders, including the Federal Government and civil society, to recognize the urgency of this situation and to act decisively. The current state of affairs in Zamfara demands leadership that is accountable, ethical, and committed to prioritizing the needs of its citizens above political expediency.

"We implore Governor Dauda Lawal to resign in the interest of peace and security within Zamfara State. The time is now to place the wellbeing of our people above all else, for in their safety and prosperity lies the future of our communities" the statement said.

Northern Awarness Condemns Lawal's Attacks on Defence Minister

The Northern Awareness Network (NAN) has expressed grave concern over the recent public criticisms directed towards Defence Minister Bello Mohammed Matawalle by Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal.

This political maneuvering, according to a statement by the NAN chairman, Salihu Sulaiman, is not only ill-timed but also appears to undermine the significant strides made in the fight against insecurity in the region. Such actions threaten the collaborative efforts that have been essential in restoring safety and stability, raising critical questions about the current leadership’s commitment to addressing the pervasive security crisis.

Zamfara and its neighboring states have long suffered from a catastrophic security situation, where acts of banditry have ravaged communities and disrupted everyday life. In response, Minister Matawalle has initiated several strategic measures aimed at curbing the violence, including the strategic deployment of military resources and enhanced community engagement.

Noteworthy successes under his leadership include the neutralization of key bandit leaders and the significant reduction of bandit forces operating in the region. These measures have not only brought a semblance of security back to affected areas but have also laid the groundwork for the potential socio-economic revitalization that the region desperately needs.

Amidst this backdrop, Governor Lawal's vociferous attacks on Matawalle raise pertinent questions about his intentions. His apparent culpability, particularly documented in a recently circulated letter titled 'RE-NORTH-WESTERN GOVERNORS/UN-ORGANIZED SECURITY SUMMIT IN KATSINA, unveil a troubling nexus between the state government and criminal enterprises. The document requests the outrageous sum of One Billion, Three Hundred and Seventy-Eight Million Naira to fund a dubious reconciliation program with notorious bandit leaders—individuals who have perpetuated violence and terror in the region.

This request, purportedly aimed at providing financial incentives to high-profile bandits, coupled with reported payoffs to certain media outlets, betrays an unsettling degree of complicity with those violent actors who have exploited the vulnerabilities of local communities.

What is particularly disheartening is that Lawal's public disdain for Matawalle’s efforts seems motivated by a desire for political capital rather than genuine concern for public safety.

"His stance not only betrays a lack of understanding regarding the complexities of the security crisis in Northern Nigeria but also raises alarms about the potential ramifications of political discord on collective security efforts.

As responsible leaders are expected to promote unity in the face of adversity, Lawal's actions may serve to embolden criminal elements, distracting from the unified front that is critical in the ongoing fight against insecurity.

NAN contends that the prevailing successes against banditry in Zamfara and its surrounding regions are not merely the product of one individual's efforts but rather a culmination of collaborative strategies involving diverse stakeholders, including community leaders and military operatives.

The actions of Governor Lawal, particularly his pointed criticisms of the Defence Minister, could ripple through the political landscape in ways that undermine the fragile security gains achieved thus far.

Given the gravity of these circumstances, NAN calls for Governor Lawal’s immediate resignation to ensure that the commendable initiatives put forth by Minister Matawalle can progress unhindered. Should he refuse, there may be a compelling case for the federal government to impose a state of emergency in Zamfara, appointing a sole administrator with a singular focus on addressing the intractable security issues plaguing the region.

An authoritative approach may re-establish order and facilitate a more robust and coordinated response from security forces, rooted in adherence to the law and the vital objective of achieving enduring peace.

"We also acknowledge that the collective movement towards stabilizing the North-West commenced with President Tinubu's directive, which led to the on-ground operations under Matawalle's administration. Prior to these interventions, the North-West was rife with horror, as rampant kidnapping rings held entire communities hostage.

"The emergence of a more secure environment, wherein bandit leaders like Bello Turji have been effectively sidelined and others like Halilu Sububu cut down, is a testament to the successes fueled by a renewed commitment to combatting insecurity.

"It is vital to respect and acknowledge the significant victories against the forces of insecurity that have afflicted our communities. The Northern populace understands profoundly the consequences of lax leadership, which often emboldens criminality. Therefore, the commendable efforts of President Tinubu and the operational success of our military forces must not be downplayed or undermined by politically motivated discord.

NAN reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the ongoing battle against insecurity in Northern Nigeria. We applaud the sacrifices made by our armed forces, celebrate the collaborative spirit fostered under Minister Matawalle, and express our deep appreciation for the international allies working alongside us to restore peace. "However, the specter of politically motivated actions, such as those demonstrated by Governor Lawal, necessitates vigilance, collective action, and an unwavering commitment to unity in pursuit of a secure future for all residents of the North-West" it added.
