Instead of using his platform and influence to advocate for transparency and accountability within the party, Obasanjo accepted the 1999 President Ticket pro bono, effectively positioning himself at the helm of a party that was marred by corruption and other malpractices. Like the proverbial Donkey, he seems oblivious to the consequences of his decisions and the impact they have had on the country and its people. This inability to acknowledge his mistakes and learn from them speaks to a deeper character flaw that is not just unfortunate but dangerous for Nigeria's future.

Obasanjo's habit of forgetting the past and repeating the same mistakes is a cause for concern for all Nigerians. His disregard for democratic norms, his willingness to put personal gain above the greater good, and his reluctance to take responsibility for his actions all point to a leader who is out of touch with reality. If Nigeria is to move forward and address the challenges it faces, it is crucial that leaders like Obasanjo learn from their past mistakes and demonstrate a genuine commitment to accountability and transparency. Anything less would be a disservice to the Nigerian people and a betrayal of the ideals of democracy.

NAN Tackles Obasanjo Over call to Sack Mahmood Yakubu

The Northern Awareness Network (NAN) has taken a firm stance against former President , Olusegun Obasanjo’s recent critiques of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu highlighting the hypocrisy embedded within Obasanjo’s assertions. 

NAN in a statement issued by it's Chairman Salihu Suleiman said, "it is indeed shameless for Obasanjo, who admitted during his own period of electoral malfeasance that even Jesus Christ cannot conduct credible elections in Nigeria, to now accuse the government of failing in this regard.

Obasanjo's track record on electoral integrity is questionable, to say the least.

"During his time in office, there were numerous reports of irregularities, violence, and rigging in elections. He himself has admitted to manipulating elections to ensure victory for his preferred candidates. In light of this, it is difficult to take his criticisms of the current government seriously.

"It is important to hold our leaders accountable for their actions and decisions. However, it is hypocritical for someone like Obasanjo, who has presided over flawed elections in the past, to now point fingers at others. If he truly cared about the integrity of the electoral process, he should reflect on his own past actions and work towards ensuring free and fair elections for all Nigerians".

NAN averred that for a leader who once presided over a system riddled with corruption, whose presidency was characterized by electoral malpractice, to now stand as a self-proclaimed arbiter of electoral integrity raises pertinent questions about the moral authority he wields in critiquing contemporary governance.

"Obasanjo’s tenure was not merely a passage of time; it was a period during which the very foundations of Nigeria’s electoral processes were laid. His administration witnessed elections marred by irregularities, where results were announced even as voters stood in queues. Such actions not only undermined the democratic ethos but also institutionalized corruption in the political fabric of Nigeria. For the former president to now label the 2023 elections a “travesty” is not only exaggerated but also a glaring display of cognitive dissonance.

"The essence of leadership lies in accountability. It is imperative for leaders to acknowledge their legacies, both good and bad. Obasanjo’s presidency was marked by a lack of significant electoral reforms, which he now decries in the current administration. During his time in office, he did not prioritize the establishment of a robust electoral commission, nor did he advocate for transparency in the electoral process. Instead, he appears to have turned a blind eye to the very issues that plague the electoral system today.

"Moreover, Obasanjo’s administration was characterized by a manual electoral process, often fraught with inefficiencies and opportunities for manipulation. His criticisms of the current commission’s reliance on technology, such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Election Result Viewing Portal (IReV), seem misplaced.

"The transition to a more technologically advanced electoral system is a complex endeavor that requires foresight, resources, and a commitment to reform—qualities that were conspicuously absent during his presidency.

Corruption is a pervasive issue that has plagued Nigeria for decades. Obasanjo’s involvement in institutionalizing corruption cannot be overlooked. 

"His presidency was marked by allegations of financial impropriety, including accusations of using public funds for personal projects, such as the construction of his presidential library on his farm. The infamous “Ghana-must-go” bags filled with money that were allegedly used to influence members of the National Assembly further tarnish his legacy. These actions raise a fundamental question: how can a leader who has so actively participated in corrupt practices now seek to lecture others on governance and integrity?

The Northern Awareness Network’s  also asserted that Obasanjo has no moral grounds to lecture anyone, let alone Nigerians, on leadership, adding that his call for accountability is not merely a critique of one individual but a broader appeal for all leaders to reflect on their actions and the consequences they have had on the nation’s democratic processes.

"As Nigeria grapples with the challenges of electoral integrity, it is crucial for contemporary leaders to learn from the past. The current administration, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, must prioritize the establishment of a transparent and accountable electoral process. This requires a concerted effort to address the root causes of electoral malfeasance, rather than succumbing to the distractions posed by past leaders who have failed to take responsibility for their legacies.

"While it is important to listen to all perspectives on the issue of electoral integrity, we must also consider the credibility and motives of those making accusations. Obasanjo's sudden concern for the conduct of elections in Nigeria should be viewed with skepticism, given his own history of electoral malpractice. Shettima said, the forum acknowledges the significant strides made by the NNPC Ltd under Mr. Kyari's leadership, adding that the recent discharge of certain officers and the appointment of new leaders, focused on expertise and merit, signifies a clear commitment to achieving operational excellence and financial sustainability. 

He acknowledged that such move will undoubtedly boost the company's competitive edge in the international oil and gas market.

Call For INEC Chairman Professor Yakubu's Removal Mischievous

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has described the recent resurgence of calls for the removal of the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu is mischievous.

A statement issued by the President General of the forum Yerima Shettima said, "the calls, primarily emanating from discontented politicians who view power as an end in itself, are not only misguided but also detrimental to the democratic fabric of our nation.

In recent weeks, we have witnessed a cacophony of voices, driven by self-interest and political opportunism, clamoring for the ousting of Professor Yakubu. Such demands are rooted in a profound misunderstanding of the role of INEC and its leadership". 

Yerima said, it is imperative to clarify that under Professor Yakubu’s stewardship, INEC has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the principles of fairness, transparency, and integrity in the electoral process. The commission has consistently upheld the sanctity of our elections, ensuring that the voices of the Nigerian people are heard and respected.

"The integrity of elections is a cornerstone of any democratic society, and the AYCF stands firmly behind INEC’s efforts to fortify this principle. The recent elections, conducted under Professor Yakubu’s guidance, have been characterized by a level of transparency that has not only earned the confidence of the electorate but has also been acknowledged by both local and international observers. 

"Contrary to the mischievous and unfounded claims made by his critics, the electoral results reflect the will of the people, a testament to the rigorous processes instituted by INEC.

We take particular exception to the involvement of peripheral figures, such as Lawyer Anthony Ehilebo, who have emerged as hitmen for this unpatriotic project against Professor Yakubu. It is disheartening to witness individuals, driven by ulterior motives, attempting to undermine the credibility of an institution that plays a pivotal role in safeguarding our democracy. 

The AYCF categorically condemned such actions and warned that those who engage in such treachery will be held accountable in the fullness of time, adding that it is crucial to recognize that the calls for the removal of Professor Yakubu are not merely an attack on an individual; they represent a broader assault on the democratic process itself.

"Such actions threaten to erode the public’s trust in electoral institutions, which is vital for the stability and progress of our nation. The AYCF implores all stakeholders, including political leaders and the citizenry, to reject these divisive tactics and instead focus on constructive dialogue that fosters unity and progress.

Stop Sponsoring Protests Against Matawelle Ohanaeze Ndigbo Cautions Zamfara Governor Lawal

The apex Igbo sociocultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has condemned the alarming trend of what it termed political witch-hunting directed against Dr. Bello Matawelle, the Minister of State for Defence allegedly by Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State.

A statement issued by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo said, such unwarranted campaign not only undermines the necessary focus on security and stability but also represents a gross misuse of taxpayer resources.

"The recent orchestrated protests in Abuja, allegedly funded by the Zamfara government, demanding the removal of Dr. Matawelle amidst the ongoing crisis of banditry in the state, are profoundly disheartening. Such actions shift the focus away from the pressing challenges faced by the people of Zamfara, where rampant banditry continues to threaten lives and livelihoods. The deployment of public funds for politically motivated protests is not only unnecessary but an affront to the citizens who suffer under the weight of insecurity".

Ohanaeze Ndigbo called upon Governor Dauda Lawal to recognize that his foremost responsibility as Chief Security Officer of Zamfara is to ensure the safety of all citizens, including the Igbo community that has faced threats, violence, and economic destabilization due to the brazen acts of bandits.

According to the apex Igbo group, engaging in politically charged rhetoric does nothing but exacerbate the existing turmoil and distract from our collective goal of restoring peace and safety in the region.

"The federation has borne witness to the gallant efforts of various stakeholders in the fight against banditry, and it is imperative that Governor Lawal aligns his administration with the Federal Government to formulate and implement actionable strategies that effectively combat these nefarious activities. 

"We urge him to close ranks with Dr. Bello Matawelle, setting aside any political differences to enhance security operations aimed at curtailing banditry, which does not discriminate between ethnicities or political affiliations. 

The Igbo group affirmed that, "The safety of Igbo traders and other Nigerians in Zamfara must overshadow any political incentives that dictate the actions of our leaders. We have no vested interest in the ongoing political tussles between the PDP and APC; rather, our paramount concern is the welfare and protection of our people who suffer at the hands of bandits.

"It is with great urgency that we advocate for immediate actions that prioritize the lives and businesses threatened by rampant violence in Zamfara. It is time for Governor Dauda Lawal to demonstrate statesmanship by fostering a partnership oriented towards genuine solutions, rather than indulging in a divisive political theater that serves only to further endanger the populace.
