The Arewa Youth Assembly For Good Leadership (AYAGL) has averred that putting into perspectives former and recent actions of the Senate President Godswill Akpabio against Northern Senators, it is crystal clear that the Senate President has something against the northern region hence fighting the North directly and indirectly.

AYAGL who also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to call him to order

in the interest of justice, harmony and peace, posited that "For us as Northern Youths, we feel Akpabio is fighting the entire Northern region and would want to silence all the notable voices from the region who are critical of his high handedness and sectional politics".

Addressing a press conference in Kaduna, the Speaker of the AYAGL, Ambassador Abdul Danbature reiterated that, "going by what has happened under the leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio, we believe Akpabio is fighting the North directly or indirectly. Our reasons for this belief is not farfetched. The perfunctory suspension of distinguished Senator Natasha Akpoti recently has reinforced our beliefs that Akpabio is fighting the North".

The youth group queried' "What has Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduanghan  done to warrant her suspension from legislative duties for 6 months, what has She done to warrant her change of seat? What has She done to warrant her removal as Senate Committee Chairman on Local Content and above all, what has Northern women done for continue harassment?

"What has Northern Nigeria done against Senator Akpabio to stop a motion moved by senator Natasha on NLNG gas pipeline project to Northern Nigeria? Alot of questions are begging for answers and we hope Senator Akpabio will provide answers.

"Northern Nigeria deserves more than what its getting from Akpabio as Senate President. Without the overwhelming support of our Senators from the North, Akpabio wouldn't be sitting as Senate President today. He must stop the victimisation of Senators from the North. He must stop his selective justice. He should realise that power, position and influence are ephemeral.

Since the emergence of Godswill Akpabio as the Senate President of Federal Republic of Nigeria, it has been one drama to another and as discerning Northern Nigeria Youth, we are gradually jumping to the conclusions that Akpabio has a axe to grind with some section of the country especially, the North.

 As Youth who constitute the bulk of the population of Northern Nigeria, we have unanimously resolved to lend our voice in condemnation of the mistreatment and maltreatment Northern Nigeria Senators have been subjected to under the leadership of Akpabio. 

We have endured and tolerated Akpabio beyond limit and now it is time to speak out. We have realised our Senators from the North are afraid to call a spade a spade because of fear of witch hunting and suspension from the Senate. 

Danbature further  said, Senator Akpabio must stop relegating the North, stressing that "He must stop his anti North policy. Let Akpabio quickly recall Senator Natasha Akpoti in the interest of justice otherwise, posterity will remember him harshly.

"Let our Northern leaders call Senator Akpabio to order and let the Southern leaders too do same in the interest of peace and unity. This is not just a Senate issue but a national disgrace. Senator Akpabio has ridiculed and denigrated the parliament in Nigeria. We are now a laughing stock among the comity of Nations.

"Akpabio must heed to our call to recall Senator Natasha within 48 hours else we will occupy National Assembly Complex, block lokoja -Kaduna express road and all the 19 Northern States and FCT. We are very much ready and prepared to engage in civil protest until our demands are met. 

"We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to wade into this matter because some section of the North believes Akpabio could not have done this without his imprimatur".

"As Youth, we are using this medium to tell Akpabio that Nothing last forever, no position is permanent and no power is eternal. Therefore, we will like to advise him to be circumspect and treat his colleagues equally and fairly".

Shehu Sani visits home of football legend, Ayo Ogunlana in Kaduna

 

Human Rights activist and Senator who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th National Assembly, Senator Shehu Sani has visited the Kaduna home of the late football legend Ayo Ogunlana during which he condole with the wife and family members.

Senator Sani who described late Ogunlana as a man who was an inspiration to many young people during his foitball playing days and even after he retired from active football.

While comforting the wife and family members over the painful death, the Senator said," I have always asked about him and wanted to get to see him lately but could not get to.visit him until I saw a flier of his death.

" Infact, even when I saw the flier of his demise, I could hardly believe it, so I sent the flier to Tijanni Babangida and Daniel Amokachi to confirm the situation which they confirmed painfully.

" Madam, the death of your husband is painful to us all, not just you and the children but we cannot question God, please take heart and be strong for the children and grandchildren left behind.

" I will urge that his legacies be sustained even after his death and I will be interested in a foundation in his honour" he assured the wife.

The Senator stressed that "it is a good that you are no more and people keep talking good things about you. Your husband has left a big shoe, his legacies should be protected" he encouraged.

"Take heart. You are a source of comfort created to be together.your late husband found his missing ribs in you, having been peacefully married for over 47 years together, God will comfort you" the Senator prayed.

Mrs Ogunlana who in tears thanked the Senator for finding time to visit and condole them said, her husband who died on Friday 14th February which was on Valentine Day was not sick.

She described her late husband as a friend while reiterating that "He was never sick, on that faithful day, he came back from his early morning jogging and said he never understood his body since coming from jogging and asked me to take him inside because he was no longer able to walk and we assisted him to the chair in the living room.

" Shortly while on the chair, he stretched and sat on the floor and thereafter lay on the floor and insisted be taken to the room. I immediately called the doctor who asked that I administered a particular drug to him but no response, so we rushed him to the hospital  and that was the end of my husband" she said.

" My husband is a truthful man, that is one thing i can say about my him, we have lived as friends for 47 years now I. Marriage and God has kept us together even through our his playing days and blessed with children and grandchildren. He was a loving husband and father" she narrated.

Late Ogunlana was a highly astute and vibrant footballer who served the country in several capacities and won several awards.

In his playing days, he was fondly called "dodo mayana" and a "free kick specialist because of his scoring ability.

AYCF Call For Immediate Rescue Of Afenifere Youth Council President

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF)  said the alarming situation surrounding the abduction of Prince Eniola Joseph Ojajuni, the President of the Afenifere Youth Council called for urgent attention , demanding for hi immediate release by the kodnappers.

AYCF in a statement by it's President General Yerima Shettima averred that since the forcible seizure on Monday, February 17, 2025, of the Afenifere Youth President, he has remained in captivity since then, a situation he described as worrisome .

According to  Shettima, more worrisome is.the.fact that the  kidnappers are demanding an exorbitant ransom of ₦100 million, a situation he said  is compounded by the kidnappers'  ultimatum, threatening to take his life if their demands are not met.

"The recent escalation in the kidnappers’ demands, which now includes the provision of two Keke NAPEP vehicles, alongside a menacing deadline set for Tuesday, at 3 PM, underscores the urgent need for immediate action. 

"The threat to execute Prince Ojajuni if these demands are not met is not just a reflection of the lawlessness that has gripped our nation, but also a stark reminder of the fragility of life in the face of greed and desperation.

He posited that Prince Ojajuni is not merely a name but a beacon of hope and a symbol of the aspirations of our youth, adding that his unwavering commitment to championing the cause of the Yoruba people has resonated deeply within our communities.

"His abduction represents not only a personal tragedy for his family and friends but also a grievous affront to the collective conscience of our race and the nation as a whole. It is a stark reminder of the challenges our society faces in safeguarding the lives and futures of our youth.

"The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, representing the interests and voices of the northern youth, unequivocally condemns this act of violence and lawlessness. We recognize that the abduction of Prince Ojajuni is part of a larger crisis that has plagued our nation, where kidnappings for ransom have become an all-too-common occurrence.

This trend is not merely a regional issue; it is a national emergency that demands the immediate and concerted efforts of all levels of government.

"In light of this dire situation, we call upon the Federal Government and all relevant state authorities to take immediate action to ensure the safe release of Prince Eniola Joseph Ojajuni".

The Arewa youth leader said, it is imperative that security agencies are mobilized to locate and rescue Prince Ojajuni without delay., stressing that the Federal Government must ensure that law enforcement  are adequately equipped and empowered to address the rising tide of kidnapping and violence in our society.

He further urged the Federal Government to collaborate with state governments, local communities, and civil society organizations to create a robust framework for combating kidnapping and improving the overall security situation in the country.

"Engaging with community leaders, youth organizations, and other stakeholders is essential to understanding the root causes of this crisis. A dialogue that prioritizes the safety and aspirations of our youth will foster a more secure environment for all.

The government must launch public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about safety measures and encourage community vigilance. Empowering citizens with knowledge is a crucial step in combating the menace of kidnapping. 

"We call for the immediate review and strengthening of existing laws regarding kidnapping and ransom. The legal framework must reflect the seriousness of these crimes and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable".

In the present situation, Shettima said, the AYCF stands in solidarity with the Afenifere Youth Council and all those advocating for the safe return of Prince Ojajuni  while imploring all Nigerians to unite in this critical moment, transcending ethnic and regional divides to demand justice and security for our people. 

He reiterated the urgent plea for the safe release of Prince Ojajuni, "Let us not allow fear and despair to dictate our future; instead, let us rise together as a nation, resolute in our commitment to justice, safety, and the well-being of our youth. Time is of the essence. We call upon everyone to act swiftly and decisively. The life of Prince Ojajuni hangs in the balance, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure his safe return" he stressed.

Electoral Irregularities : Northern Groups Applauds Tinubu, INEC Over Dismissal Of 3 RECs

Northern Groups under the auspices of Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) and Northern Awareness Network (NAN) has commended President Bola Tinubu and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for their firm stance on accountability in the dismissal of three suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from Adamawa, Sokoto, and Abia states. 

The groups in separate statements said, he believed that such decision is a bold step towards restoring public trust in Nigeria's electoral process and promoting ethical conduct among election officials and applauded President Tinubu's request to the Senate to terminate the appointments of the suspended RECs, as it aligns with constitutional oversight provisions and which demonstrates a commitment to upholding electoral integrity.

AYCF in its statement signed by the President General Yerima Shettima said, the forum acknowledges the INEC's efforts in upholding electoral integrity, citing the recent conviction of Professor Ignatius Uduk in Akwa Ibom State for electoral fraud during the 2019 elections as a significant victory against election malpractice. 

Shettima said, the successful prosecution sets an important precedent and sends a strong message to those who seek to compromise the integrity of Nigeria's electoral process, adding that by holding individuals accountable for their actions, the confidence in the electoral system will be restored, and citizens can have faith in the fairness and transparency of future elections.

He urged other stakeholders, such as the Directorate of State Security (DSS), the Police, other security agencies, and political parties, to follow suit by enforcing internal disciplinary measures against individuals who engage in misconduct during elections. 

"This call for accountability extends beyond electoral officials and emphasizes the importance of all parties involved in the electoral process upholding ethical standards and conducting themselves with integrity. By working together to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections in Nigeria, stakeholders can contribute to the establishment of a stronger democracy for the nation as a whole".

Similarly, NAN in its statement signed by the Chairman Salihu Suleiman also acknowledges the complexity of disciplinary processes within INEC and expresses appreciation for the time it took for the suspended RECs to be dismissed, adding that it also recognizes that adherence to due process is essential in maintaining the credibility of the electoral system and ensuring that decisions are made fairly and transparently.

"By taking time to investigate and follow proper procedures, INEC demonstrates a commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity in its operations, which is crucial for building public trust in the electoral process.

"Adherence to due process ensures that actions taken are justified and transparent. This, in turn, reinforces the credibility of the electoral system, as decisions are based on established norms and legal frameworks rather than arbitrary judgment.

"Moving forward, the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders can play a significant role in consolidating democracy in Nigeria. Ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections is a shared responsibility" Suleiman stated.

Dismissal Of 3 RECs Excites Northern Group

The Northern Awareness Network (NAN) has expressed its support for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and President Bola Tinubu over their recent decisive actions in dismissing three suspended Residents Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from Adamawa, Sokoto, and Abia states. 

This commendation underscores the vital role of maintaining electoral integrity and accountability within Nigeria’s democratic processes. 

According to NAN in its statement signed by the Chairman Salihu Suleiman said, the dismissal of the three RECs in March 2023 stemmed from serious allegations of unlawful assumption of roles and dereliction of duty during the recent general elections adding that these suspensions are emblematic of the commitment by INEC to upholding the integrity of electoral processes in Nigeria.

"INEC’s actions not only address immediate concerns of misconduct but also bolster public confidence in the electoral system's capacity to adjudicate fairly against corruption and negligence. This proactive approach is critical in setting a precedent that faces electoral malpractice head-on.

"Within the context of Nigerian politics, the urgency of maintaining electoral integrity has become increasingly pronounced. The country’s recent history has been plagued with instances of electoral fraud and malpractice, regularly undermining democratic institutions.

"The conviction of Professor Ignatius Uduk in Akwa Ibom State for electoral fraud further reflects the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions during the electoral process. "It is also important to recognize the complexities surrounding the disciplinary procedures within INEC itself. The organization has faced criticism in the past for its handling of electoral malfeasance. The thoroughness of INEC’s investigation and execution of the dismissals indicates a commitment to procedural integrity, which is essential for maintaining public trust.

AYCF, NAN says Amaechi’s remarks threatening to national security

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) and the Northern Awareness Network (NAN) have warned that recent statements by former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, could undermine national stability and incite unrest.

In separate statements, the two groups backed Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, for condemning Amaechi’s remarks, which they described as reckless and a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

The AYCF, in a statement signed by its President General, Yerima Shettima, said Amaechi’s comments suggesting that power would not be relinquished without a fight were not only irresponsible but also dangerous in a country striving for political stability. It urged authorities to take necessary steps to prevent such rhetoric from escalating into a national crisis.

The NAN, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Salihu Sulaiman, dismissed claims by Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze that Matawalle was intimidating Amaechi. It argued that freedom of speech must not be used to incite violence or threaten national security.

The group maintained that Matawalle’s intervention was necessary to prevent political tensions from escalating into a security crisis, adding that political stability remains a key pillar of national security.

“Nigeria’s unity must not be sacrificed on the altar of political ambition. The law must be applied to anyone attempting to instigate chaos,” NAN stated.

The groups reaffirmed their commitment to peace and urged political actors to promote stability rather than make statements that could endanger national security.

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) vehemently condemns the recent volte-face by Northern Governors regarding the national tax reform bills.  After generating needless controversy and misleading the public, these governors have inexplicably capitulated to the reforms.  

The AYCF, from the outset, has maintained that these reforms, despite potential short-term challenges, are essential for Nigeria's overall development. We view the governors' actions as a betrayal of the trust placed in them, a demonstration of their incompetence in managing their states' affairs, and ultimately, a disservice to the Northern people. This press statement outlines our deep concerns and calls for accountability.

The Northern Governors initially presented a united front against the proposed tax reforms, citing concerns about their potential negative impact on the already struggling Northern economy. This stance, while arguably understandable given the region's socio-economic challenges, was fundamentally flawed. 

According to the President General of the AYCF Yerima Shettima in a statement , the arguments lacked substance and failed to acknowledge the vital role of robust taxation in funding essential public services like healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Instead of engaging constructively with the government to address specific concerns and negotiate amendments, they chose to employ divisive rhetoric, fueling public unrest and hindering national progress. 

 This approach reveals a lack of foresight and strategic planning, highlighting their failure to effectively represent the interests of their constituents. The sudden and unexplained shift in their position, without any apparent concessions or amendments achieved, casts serious doubt on their integrity and raises questions about the motives behind their initial opposition.

"We recognize that effective taxation is the cornerstone of a functioning and prosperous nation.  While we acknowledge the need for sensitive implementation to minimize hardship, particularly amongst vulnerable populations, we firmly believe that the benefits of these reforms significantly outweigh any potential drawbacks.  Increased tax revenue will allow the government to invest heavily in critical sectors, creating jobs, improving infrastructure, and enhancing the overall quality of life for all Nigerians, including those in the North. 

Shettima said, the Governors’ initial opposition, therefore, not only hampered national progress but also demonstrated a disregard for the long-term welfare of the very people they are elected to serve.  Their actions appear driven by short-sighted political considerations rather than a genuine commitment to the development of the North.

"The Northern Governors' opposition to the tax reforms cannot be divorced from their wider failures in managing their respective states.  Many Northern states grapple with persistent poverty, underdevelopment, and a lack of basic amenities.

"This chronic underperformance stems from several factors, including poor governance, corruption, and a lack of effective resource allocation.  Instead of focusing on these critical issues and finding innovative ways to improve the lives of their citizens, the governors chose to deflect attention by focusing on the tax reform debate. This suggests a deliberate attempt to shift blame for their own failures onto the federal government. 

The AYCF contends that their initial opposition was a distraction tactic, an attempt to mask their incompetence and avoid accountability for their shortcomings. The hasty reversal of their position further strengthens this argument.

"The Northern Governors' actions constitute a clear betrayal of the trust placed in them by the Northern people.  By initially opposing the tax reforms and then conceding, they have demonstrated a fundamental lack of respect for the electorate.  They engaged in misleading rhetoric, playing on public anxieties to garner support for their position, only to abandon it without explanation. 

"This manipulation undermines the democratic process and erodes public confidence in leadership. The AYCF calls upon the Northern Governors to provide a clear and transparent explanation for their change of heart.  The people deserve to know the reasons behind this abrupt shift and whether any concessions were made that would compromise the effectiveness of the tax reforms".

The AYCF reiterated its unwavering support for the national tax reform bills. We believe that these reforms are crucial for Nigeria's economic growth and development, and we condemn the Northern Governors' inconsistent and ultimately deceitful actions. Their failure to effectively manage their states and their manipulation of public opinion highlight a systemic problem of governance within the region. 

"We call for greater accountability from these governors and urge them to focus on their primary responsibilities: improving the lives of the people they represent through good governance and effective resource management. The hasty surrender to the tax reform bills without meaningful engagement or a transparent explanation constitutes a disservice to the North and a betrayal of the public's trust.  

The AYCF will continue to advocate for policies that promote sustainable development and economic progress for all Nigerians, and will remain vigilant in holding our leaders accountable for their actions, he stated
