Two prominent northern organizations—the Northern Awareness Network (NAN) and the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF)—have called on Nigerian youth to avoid participating in the planned nationwide protests against the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The protests, organized by the “ReformINEC and SackYakubu” Movement, are set to begin in Abuja on December 5, 2024.
In a statement issued by NAN’s Chairman, Salihu Suleiman, the group acknowledged the right to peaceful protest but warned against actions that could incite unrest. Suleiman emphasized that while calls for INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s resignation reflect public discontent, the protests risk causing unnecessary tension and distracting from the pursuit of meaningful electoral reforms.
“We urge the youth to channel their energy toward constructive dialogue and initiatives that promote unity and peace,” Suleiman said. “Engaging in protests driven by divisive motives only undermines our democratic institutions. We commend those advocating for electoral reform but insist that such efforts must be rooted in collaboration with the government and stakeholders.”
Similarly, AYCF President General Yerima Shettima condemned the planned protests, labeling them as attempts by saboteurs to destabilize the nation. He criticized the use of protests as a tool to attack INEC and its leadership, stressing the importance of preserving the integrity of the electoral process.
“It is disheartening to see youth being misled by groups pushing personal agendas under the guise of reform,” Shettima said. “Attacking INEC without credible evidence is counterproductive. We urge the youth to reject these divisive calls and focus on dialogue to address any legitimate grievances.”
Both groups called on the federal government and relevant authorities to prevent any unrest and ensure national stability. They urged stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and collective efforts in enhancing Nigeria’s electoral processes rather than resorting to protests fueled by misinformation.
“Let us be the generation that champions unity, peace, and constructive engagement,” Suleiman concluded. “Together, we can build a stronger, more united Nigeria.”
