Northern Group Decries Killings Of Northerners In South-East, Seeks Justice

By Editor

The Northern Consensus Movement (NSNCM) has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in what it describes as persistent killings and destruction of properties belonging to Northerners residing in southern Nigeria, particularly in the South-East.

The group, which is a coalition of 594 associations from across the Northern states and those of Northerners in the South, expressed concern over the spate of violent attacks targeting Northerners, most recently at the Lobbanta Garke cattle market in Abia State, where five individuals were reportedly beheaded.

Addressing the press in a  conference, the National President of NSNCM, Awwal Abdullahi Aliyu, said the situation has become intolerable, citing a series of violent incidents against Northerners, including the killings in Abia and Imo states.

 Aliyu highlighted an incident in June 2024, where unknown gunmen attacked the Okigwe community in Imo State, resulting in the deaths of seven Northerners and the destruction of their properties.

He noted that “despite numerous complaints to relevant authorities, no decisive actions have been taken, raising fears that such attacks might become a recurring issue.”

Aliyu urged President Tinubu to order an unbiased investigation into the killings and ensure justice is served. He also called for proactive measures to prevent future attacks, urging security agencies to collaborate on intelligence sharing to curb the violence.

The group further demanded compensation for victims from the affected state governments, emphasizing that Northerners living in the South deserve the same protection and peaceful coexistence that Southerners enjoy in the North.

The NSNCM however reiterated its commitment to peace, stating that it would not resort to reprisals despite the provocation. The group urged the president to intervene swiftly to restore peace and ensure that justice prevails.

NAN condemn Allegations Regarding Kaduna State’s Debt Profile

The Northern Awareness Network (NAN) have said it is compelled to address the recent allegations regarding the fiscal management of Kaduna State, particularly the claims surrounding the state’s significant increase in debt under the administration of Governor Uba Sani.

These claims, suggesting that the Kaduna State Government borrowed a staggering N36 billion within just six months—outstripping the total of N29.6 billion borrowed throughout 2022 and 2023—are both alarming and unfounded.

A statement by the Chairman of NAN Salihu Suleiman said, "We take this opportunity to remind the sponsors of such spurious allegations to refrain from meddling in matters that require acute understanding and constructive dialogue. Speculative pronouncements only serve to destabilize the political landscape and undermine the ongoing development initiatives vital to the prosperity of our state.

"These assertions, claiming that the Kaduna State Government has accrued a staggering N36 billion in debt within a mere six-month timeframe, are not only alarming but fundamentally unfounded. Such a figure dwarfs the total of N29.6 billion borrowed throughout the entirety of 2022 and 2023, raising serious questions about the credibility and motivations of those disseminating these claims".

The Northern group in the statement said, in the wake of these allegations, it is crucial to highlight that responsible fiscal management is an essential aspect of governance, particularly in a state that is striving for sustainable development and economic growth.

It added; Claims that suggest reckless borrowing without regard for the implications on the state’s financial future overlook the complexities involved in state finance and the need for borrowing to facilitate impactful projects and initiatives, stressing that the juxtaposition of an alleged rapid increase in debt against the history of fiscal borrowing presents a misleading narrative that fails to encapsulate the broader economic context in which these financial decisions are made.

"The ongoing development initiatives implemented by the Kaduna State Government are vital to our state’s prosperity. They are designed not only to improve the quality of life for our citizens but also to lay the groundwork for long-term economic sustainability.

"Investments in infrastructure, education, health, and security are necessary components of this vision. It is therefore disheartening to witness attempts to undermine these crucial initiatives through speculation and misinformation.

We draw attention to the nature of governance, which often involves making difficult decisions that can include strategic borrowing as a tool for development.

"It is critical to understand that such decisions, when executed prudently, can foster economic growth and result in a stronger fiscal position in the long term. Misrepresentations of these decisions not only distort public perception but may also engender distrust among investors, stakeholders, and the citizenry.

"These allegations reflect an irresponsible attempt to politicize state finance, eroding the trust that is essential for collaborative governance and community progress. We urge all stakeholders to engage in constructive and informed dialogue rather than resorting to dangerous rhetoric that breeds division. Speculative pronouncements, devoid of understanding and insight, threaten to destabilize the political landscape and detract from our collective goals of advancing the wellbeing of Kaduna State".

NAN therefore, called upon the sponsors of such spurious claims to desist from their campaign of misinformation, adding that it is incumbent upon all of us to engage in dialogue that fosters comprehension and unity rather than division and misunderstanding and as citizens of Kaduna State, we should champion discussions that promote accountability, transparency, and responsible governance.

"It is essential that we remain vigilant and discerning in the face of misrepresentation and fear-mongering. We reaffirm our support for the efforts of the Kaduna State Government under Governor Uba Sani as it navigates the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Together, let us build a Kaduna State anchored in trust, dialogue, and a shared commitment to development" the group stressed.

AYCF Responds to Kaduna State's Debt Management Allegations, Reiterate supports for Gov. Uba Sani

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has responded to recent allegations regarding the fiscal management of Kaduna State, particularly concerning the state’s debt profile under the leadership of Governor Uba Sani.

AYCF in a statement issued by it's President General Yerima Shettima said, the claims that the state has irresponsibly accrued debt and failed to uphold its promises in this regard merit careful scrutiny and a thoughtful response, as they have implications for the political landscape and the ongoing development initiatives within our beloved state.

"It is with a sense of responsibility that we underscore the context behind Kaduna State’s financial decisions. The reported borrowing of ₦36 billion in just six months indeed raises eyebrows; however, it is imperative to evaluate this financial maneuver within the broader landscape of fiscal governance, infrastructure development, and economic revitalization efforts.

"The current economic climate in Nigeria has necessitated proactive measures to inject liquidity into state projects that are crucial for the development of our infrastructure, improvement in education, healthcare, and overall enhancement of the living standards of our citizens".

Furthermore, Shettima said, the forum  believed it is vital to acknowledge that past administrations have also made financial commitments that have led to increased debt profiles—some of which have not been addressed with the urgency and transparency needed. Thus, suggesting that the current administration has reneged on its promises without comparing its initiatives with historical precedents is an oversight that hinders constructive dialogue about our state’s future.

"The AYCF recognizes that the complexities of governance, particularly in a developing state, require a careful balance between prudent fiscal management and necessary investments in critical areas affecting the lives of the citizenry. The governor's administration has taken on the task of addressing long-neglected infrastructural decay, supporting the education sector, enhancing healthcare delivery, and fostering economic growth.

These are ambitious yet essential objectives that warrant adequate funding, and thus, short-term borrowing may often become an unavoidable necessity, Shettima stated.

"We call upon detractors of the Kaduna State Government to recognize the challenges that come with governance and to refrain from creating an atmosphere of distrust and divisiveness. The task of governance is not an easy one, and it is essential that we afford the current administration the space and support it needs to actualize its vision for the state. Governor Uba Sani and his team are committed to uplifting the socio-economic status of Kaduna State and navigating the challenges we face as a community with integrity and diligence".

The AYCF urged all stakeholders, including citizens, civil society organizations, and political actors, to foster a collaborative atmosphere instead of resorting to divisive criticism. We must collectively engage in constructive dialogue that leads to actionable solutions for the betterment of our state.

"In conclusion, we reiterate our support for Governor Uba Sani in his endeavors to steer Kaduna State towards a more prosperous future. Let us rally together as one community, shedding the shackles of past grievances and looking forward to a shared vision of progress. Kaduna State deserves our collective support, and it is high time we invest in that journey of resilience and growth".

By Editor

Noting the successes recorded through the recent intensive onslaught by the military on bandits especially in the Northwest, which was coordinated by the minister, the council appreciates Matawalle “for not disappointing the confidence reposed in him by the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.”

YYC said in a statement by its President, Comrade Eric Oluwole that: “We in the Yoruba Youth Council, the umbrella organisation of Yoruba youths across Nigeria, appreciate the contributions of the Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Mohammed Matawalle to the successes recorded so far by the President Tinubu's administration, especially in subduing the worrisome insecurity marked by banditry, kidnapping for ransom and senseless killings that had been ravaging the northern part of the country over the years before this administration assumed office.

“We give kudos to the Minister for not disappointing the confidence reposed in him by the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR when he entrusted him with the sensitive office of ensuring the security of the entire people and property our dear Country Nigeria.

“We note with pride and satisfaction that Matawalle has done a good job by gradually subduing the bandits especially in the Northwest. This is a commendable feat, and it is good for our Country.

“With his record of achievements so far, Matawalle has proved himself to be the best man for this job. Not only that, he has also proved himself as one of the best Ministers serving in the cabinet of  President Tinubu based on our assessment. We congratulate him for these.

*We commend Mr President, a notable talent hunter, for finding Matawalle, picking him and reposing confidence in him as one of his most intimate helpers in running the highly sensitive Ministry of Defence.”

Oluwole said that the recent relocation of Matawalle with service chiefs to Sokoto State, a banditry hotspot, in a special operation directed by President Tinubu to flush out bandits and other criminal elements from the North-West, is yielding commendable results.

He noted that banditry and other criminalities had reduced drastically in the zone since September 3, when the minister asked for the support of the government and people of Sokoto State in executing the presidential directive on insecurity.

According to Oluwole: “As noted generally by Sokoto State residents, the initiative by the minister and service chiefs has yielded positive results by deescalating the worrisome insecurity in the zone.

“Also, the Special Adviser to Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu on Carrier and Security Matters, Colonel Abdul Ahmad, (retd.), has confirmed that the special anti-banditry operation in the North-West states has yielded positive impacts.

“Ahmad who noted that the minister's and service chiefs’ presence during the operation had renewed the confidence of the residents, who can now heave a sigh of relief, knowing that the military is steadfast in its resolve to protect them.

“We are happy that since the Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Matawalle and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa relocated to the Sokoto 8 Division of the Nigerian Army command, banditry and insecurity in the North West have drastically reduced, while many notorious bandits leaders, including Kachalla Halilu Sububu, Jamilu Nazakiru, Wala Baburki, Sani Black and Danbaleri Mashekari terrorising the zone have been neutralised.”

Oluwole listed Matawalle's other notable achievements including:

- Facilitating the significant progress made by the Defence Ministry in indigenous arms production, in which DICON plays a crucial role;

- Transforming Nigeria into an emerging hub for advanced military hardware by aiding the growth of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) in defense manufacturing. Through this initiative, many African nations are now source military equipment from Nigeria;

- Enactment of the DICON Act 2023, a legislation that empowers DICON to contribute meaningfully to national security and economic development;

- Canvassing unity and loyalty by urging Northern political elites to demonstrate complete loyalty to His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR., stressing the importance of unity in addressing insecurity in the region;

- Combatting Insecurity - Matawalle has been working tirelessly to combat insecurity, banditry, and terrorism in Nigeria, aligning with President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.

Degrading of banditry: Ohanaeze youths pass vote of confidence on Matawalle, military high command

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has lauded the Nigerian Military over the recent onslaught against bandits.

This came as the military neutralized top bandits within the past few weeks, a development that has received accolades from across the country.

In a statement made available to journalists on Monday, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, said the recent feat by the Military had reignited hope in the hearts of Nigerians.

Okwu said bandits, who hitherto acted like they were invincible had been decimated by the military in what he called “a determined vigour to take back the country from terrorists.”

According to him, “our hearts glide with joy over the recent feat recorded by the Nigerian Military in the fight against bandits and terrorists.

“For several months, these bandits instilled fear in the minds of Nigerians as they acted and operated as though they were invincible.

“However, all that has changed with the recent onslaught by the Military against them, like never before.

“There is a clear indication that the President Bola Tinubu’s order that the security chiefs should relocate to the North West and wipe out banditry, has made remarkable impacts.

“Our kudos goes to the Minister of State, Defence, Bello Matawalle and the Service Chiefs for this collaborative action which has rekindled hope in the hearts of Nigerians.

“The degradation of the bandits' operations, which has even culminated into an internal war among them, is no mean feat.

“We are proud of the Nigerian Military and the Defence Minister, State, Malawalle, who has shown commitment towards the restoration of peace and security across the Nigerian states.

“The Minister coordinated the operation in the North West, which success we are all celebrating. We pass a vote of confidence in him and the other defence chiefs and urge them to maintain the tempo.

“We commend Matawalle, the Military High Command, the intelligence agencies, and the troops for their valiant efforts, synergy and dedication, which have resulted in the recent laudable outcomes.”

While saluting President Tinubu on the occasion of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, Okwu urged him to continue to keep faith with his security chiefs “as we are proud of their recent achievements.

“All we ask for is that Nigerians should continue to encourage them as they carry out this very important duty of securing the country.”

“Having said this, we also urge Zamfara State governor, Dauda Lawal to end further distraction of the Defence Minister, State, Matawalle and allow him to concentrate on his onerous service to the nation.

“Security should be fully detached from politics, as Governor Lawal is currently doing. It is not in the best interest of the country.

“We also call on Matawalle and the other security chiefs to remain undaunted and not be distracted as the good people of Nigeria appreciate their sense of dedication to duty,” Okwu further stated.
